Not so grea news at the Dr.
Dante has a newly developed , quite pronounced heart murmur.
Needles to say, we are upset.
My daughter had a hear murmur that grew worse as the weeks past and it turned out that she had Tetralogy of Fallot and required major open heart surgery when she was just over a year old. (was only 13lbs!) She was in a coma and she was so sick.... and omg.... to hear those words at the dr.s today. It was like a kick in the chest.
Dr checked for cyanosis, which there isnt, (my daughter was a cyanotic baby, so i know what to watch for)
I know that the majority of heart murmurs are innocent, but his murmur was loud enough that the Dr was quite concerned, and of course the fact that it is pronounced and loud now, as he is growing bigger is scary. I know as the heart grows and vessels grow, often undetected defects rise to the surface. I spent the first year and a half of my daughters life at Childrens Hospital 3G Cardiac wing and saw/heard SO many things. I am hoping like crazy that this turns out to be innocent.
Another worry, that the Dr took note of although he wasnt super concerned, is that his growth has REALLY slowed down. He was 14lbs at 8 weeks and now, 8 weeks later, he is only 15lbs 4 oz. Not much of a gain.

Shilo Boy do i know where you are right now. I was so scared with Trey's murmur & I still am not convinced that it is gone. I will keep you in my thoughts. I hope that all is Ok.
What is the Dr wanting to do? Are you going to be having some tests done? If so, what & When & WHere?

Leslie, we will go into Vancouver, to the childrens hospital and have an echocardiogram done, it is an ultrasound of the heart, and its all done in colour to show the bloodflow.

Re: Not so grea news at the Dr.
looks like we posted at the same time...
well, im supposed to watch for any cyanosis, and then within the next few days we will bring him into vancouver for the echo.
My daughter had a severe heart defect that required meds and then surgery when she passed 15lbs. It was a month in the hospital, and a coma and it was such a nightmare..... i had blocked alot of it out because i was pregnant with my youngest at the time, and poor Caitlin was only just over 15lbs... so tiny and so blue... but being told today by my doctor about this was just such a blow. My doctor is the guy that wasnt stressed about the jaundice or my diabetes, but my, he really looked concerned today. Told me to watch his face for signs of cyanosis while feeding him and if i notice any, 911 or off to emerg... hopefully we can get into children's hospital asap to figure out what , if anything , is wrong.
Just hoping that it is a fluke that it didnt show up before, and that it is something he will outgrow. The sudden decline in weight gain worried him too. he has only gained a pound in two months. BUT, i pointed out, that he has grown two inches in the past 8-10 weeks, so its not like hes not growing.

Re: Not so grea news at the Dr.
Thanks ladies..
yes, I am worried...
not as much as poor PAblo though.
He has been so sad, right now, hes lying on Dante's playmat, watching Dante play....
I keep telling him that no matter what, EVEN if there was a problem heaven-forbid, that the pediatric cardiologists are awesome and that we need to keep in mind my daughter was SUPER sick, but that she came thru just great, and THAT was 14 years ago...
CARRIE! ARent u supposed to be in bed?!

Re: Not so grea news at the Dr.
Michelle: sorry, i didnt see your post..
The breastfeeding was only a problem for two days following my fever. But i had been weighing him every week since his last weigh in at 8 weeks. He was 14lbs then, and I could barely see the scale moving... it slowly creeped up to 15lbs. but IT has been 8 weeks and only a pound and 4oz? He eats fine, and I know i have lots of milk.... my daughter had a very hard time gaining weight, and it was somehow related to her heart. Even now, she is one of the smallest for her age in her school.
Im hoping that maybe it is because he skips his night time feeds.

Re: Not so grea news at the Dr.
Shilo it could be because he skips his nighttime feeds. But I do know that that was one of the concerns with Trey was the weight gain.

Re: Not so grea news at the Dr.
I was thinking about the same thing, the skipping of the night time feeds.
Hes only been skipping them about a month, the month prior, mid october to mid november, he was still at 15lbs.
I guess its just such a drastic change for me, i was used to his rapid weight gain, he was gaining almost a pound per week, 4 pounds/month. And now, a pound in two months. The average weight gain at the low end he said is about 3oz/week.So, should be 24 oz in two months, not 16 oz. Either way, the weight was more olike a little warning bell for me.... I know he is more active now, AND missing night feeds, so to me it only makes sense that he wouldnt be gaining AS much... burning more calories with being more active. His length is doing ok though, he is 25 inches and a bit.
Everything is just speculation til i can see on the screen I guess.
Im still going with the feeling that he is fine. He is a very active little guy, doesnt sleep much, eats like an oinker all day.... i truly just cant beleive there would be anything seriously wrong with his heart.... maybe hes just running out of iron stores and a bit anemic... that can cause murmurs too... or maybe when we DO get it checked, it will have disappeared.

Re: Not so grea news at the Dr.
Shilo, I'm so sorry to hear about Dante's heart murmur and that it is so scary for you and for Pablo. I am praying for Dante and for your family. Like Christina said, we are all here for you. Please let me know if there's anything I can do.
I know you practice the Pagan religion, would it offend you if I light a candle for Dante at my church?
