Sorry I was MIA for a while. My FIL passed away at home in his sleep Sunday morning . He had Esophageal Cancer, had chemo and surgery and did well for a short while. He started becoming confused (losing his way back home and to his office, stuff like that) and lost lots of weight. The docs said he suspects that the cancer went to his brain. Although we knew he was sick, his death was kind of sudden. Anyway, we were busy supporting DH's mom and getting funeral plans made. DH is doing OK. I think he knew his dad was dying and mentally prepared himself for the inevitable. I think it hasn't completely hit him yet, though.

One thing..mend your relationships and don't forget to say "I love you" many times over to your loved ones. Life is too short and you never know what will happen to you or your loved ones. DH's dad was not a very emotional or loving man. The way he showed he cared was through finances. Although that was appreciated, nothing substitutes for an "I love you" or a hug and a kiss.

I'm so sorry for you and your DH's loss. Last year my dad was also diagnosed with a form of cancer in November. We all thought it could be beat, even we we found that it had moved to the brain, but he sadly passed away in April. I know this is a difficult time for you and your DH, even though he may have prepared for the worst and hoped for the best. I know the my dad's funeral I was numb. I hardly remember what happened last year.

You said you don't think it has hit him yet and it probably hasn't. I know it wasn't until weeks later when my mom was playing a cassete tape of my dad (he was a minister) that I realized that I would never hear his voice again.

I remember all of the many great times with my dad and all the dumb stuff he used to do, and how important it was that he always hugged me and told me he loved me. I read that your FIL wasn't an affectionate man, but at least he found an outlet to show that he did care.

I hope I didn't bring you or your hubby down I just wanted to share, that I've been through it and that you guys aren't alone.
