Am I too overweight for pregnancy?
I'm a 22 yr. old obese woman (around 285lbs). I'm getting married soon and I desperately want to have a child. I love the idea of being younger parents. I've never been pregnant before. I have been dieting for a few months and am losing slowly. I did weight watchers and lost about 50 lbs and was down to about 274 and gained some back. I'm doing weight watchers core plan now which is really healthy. My highest weight according to the doctor office is 342, so i've lost alot i guess. I'm actually probably more active than most women my size and I eat healthy foods about 95% of the time now. I want to start walking about 30 min. a day, I think that will help alot also. I don't have any health problems besides the obvious obesity (that I know of) and I have and have normal periods despite being overweight. I've been on birth control for some months now, I used to have pretty bad cramping but the birth control helped it ALOT. When we know for sure when we want to get pregnant then I will stop the birth control. I know i'm being impatient, but I just really really want to have a baby now...but I don't know if I should start trying yet. Has anyone been my weight and pregnant at the same time? What is it like? I know about gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia. I've heard it can be managed pretty easy though if I eat right and excercise. I know I should discuss this with a doctor, but I thought maybe I could get a different kind of insight from women who understand my desperation a little better first. Thanks to all for reading and/or responding.

Re: Am I too overweight for pregnancy?
Weight and health are 2 different issues. If you are healthy and over weight then you shouldn't have a problem getting pregnant at all. I am pregnant with my 7th child now and started this pregnancy off at about 287 like I did with the pregnancy before.
Weight does NOT mean you "will" have GD or pre-e either. In my 7 pregnancies in 9 years I have yet to face any of those problems.
Now if you find you have health problems like PCOS, endometriosis, fibrous growths or even hormonal problems then it's health problems not necessarily related to your weight.
My one skinny sister has problems with her progesterone levels but her twin never had the problem.
As far as stopping the BCP's and when, that'd be up to you but I know for some it can take a good 3 months to get a strong fertility back after stopping some BC's.

Oh and BTW if you are "too overweight" to have a baby then what about the 400 pound woman who had a baby and didn't even know she was pregnant, LOL. Proves weight and health are 2 different things.

Re: Am I too overweight for pregnancy?
I've conceived both my children when I was roughly 260-270lbs. My first pregnancy was absolutely horrible!!! I didn't want to have any more because of it. I had migranes, vision loss, serious dizzy spells and dangerously high blood pressure right from the beginning and gained about 80lbs. I too went to weight watchers and lost all of that and DH and I made the decision not to have any more. Little did we know that I was already 2 weeks pregnant with baby number 2. That pregnancy was 100X better... but I was still horribly uncomfortable and very disappointed that I couldn't find anything to wear. I think that was the worse part. Especially when it's so hot and the only thing that fits is a tshirt and stretchy track pants!! Ugh! However, I had no diabetes or pre-e with either pregnancy. It's a lot to think about... whether you're overweight or not... there's always risks involved. You don't have to be skinny to have babies.

Re: Am I too overweight for pregnancy?
I was able to conceive when I was 263 pounds... I actually conceived by accident (I elevated my hips during a rather heated session and kept them elevated for a little while after and bam! I was pregnant). So, I guess I would recommend trying that! lol
As for being obese and pregnant, my weight put me at greater risk for complications, and I was diagnosed with preeclampsia in my 3rd month of pregnancy then forced into 6 months of total bedrest... THAT was no fun at all, and it didn't help my weight problem either.
Good luck doll, I hope you're able to conceive naturally and have no ill effects from your weight during pregnancy - I'm sure it does happen...

Re: Am I too overweight for pregnancy?
Don't let weight get you down!! I am having my son on Wednesday and I am currently 288. I have not gained a pound the entire pregnancy. My BP and urine have been great. This is my second child. My first was delivered at 28 weeks due to HELLP syndrome which was later discovered to be genetic (would have happended if I was skinny). So this time I took lovenox and heprine and things are great. I am also 37 years old.
I would recommend a full work up before you concieve just to know what if anything your facing. It is easier to have a plan going in than not...just my 2 cents!!! Best of luck!

Re: Am I too overweight for pregnancy?
Just wanted to let you know that I am also over weight and I am over six months pregnant. I walk about 10 miles per week, drink plenty of water, stay away from fast food/take out, and just eat healthy. I have gained and lost the same 5 lbs this entire time. Due to my weight and family health issues I took an early test for gestional diabetes and passed and will be taking another next week. Urine always come back fine along with BP and the baby. Prior to becoming pg I was a member of Weight Watchers and lost 50lbs. DH and I started TTC and had troubles until we quit smoking. Baby was conceived 3 months after. As long as you take care of yourself, you will be fine.
By the way, I actually still eat by the Weight Watchers flex plan. I just don't count the points.
Good luck!

Re: Am I too overweight for pregnancy?
You are NOT too overweight for pregnancy... don't let anyone tell you you are! not even the doctors. I was around 300 pounds after my 2nd m/c and they told me if I lost weight I could have a normal pregnancy and a normal baby.. GUESS WHAT I had a gastric bypass to help loose the weight, and I did loose 150lbs, I'm now 147.....I had my 3rd miscarriage last month. Doctors do not know what they're talking about, don't listen to them! lol
Lots of hugs and luck to you sweetie! BTW I'm also 22

Re: Am I too overweight for pregnancy?
I am overwight as well and trying to conceive. I have a 7 year old and when I was pregnant with her I was about 180 now Im about 220. The doctors and even my husband think its my weight but I dont. I have taken many tests to check myself and everything comes out fine, I also get my periods normally and am in perfect health. I dont have any diseases. I think our problem is the date factor and stress to be honest. Although I am trying to get pregnant being overweight, I wouldnt suggest it you feel that you are in good health and that you have enough energy to take care of your child, especially since you wont get smaller through your pregnancy. Believe me you want to be able to enjoy playing with your baby and caryying your baby. Good luck and maybe we meet in the delivery room lol.

As long as you take care of yourself while you are pregnant you will have a healthy baby. Good luck and dont let anyone discourage you from something that is such a blessing.

Re: Am I too overweight for pregnancy?
Don't let weight get you down. I dont think it would hurt you any to get pregnant right now. But It may be better for you and the baby to loose some weight. Im no doctor so I really dont know. But I think you woul feel better if you could loose a few lbs. I tried fentermien(I know I didnt spell that right) I lost 15 lbs why I was on it. Weight control doc. where I live in texas. I think it more of a mind over body thing. Going to the gym and walking is the best thing you can do. Just put your mind to it and just go for it. I hope you can follow your dremas and get a bfp soon.Keep up the faith and keep your mind on top of the game. You can do it!!!
