Icon9 Marosa will need surgery

We finally had her teeth appointment. (Her teeth are coming in without there enamel.) Dentist said 3 teeth (out of the 8 she has) are already really bad (full of cavities). He want to put caps on them all, and of coarse a one year old isn't going to cooperate fro that, so we have to go to the hospital and put her under . He is also going to repair any nerve damage that may be present.

He said bf is harming her teeth! He said to wean her and use a sippy cup with water or milk. I don't see how bm is any worse than milk in a sippy cup! Anyway, I am not just going to stop cold turkey. Her surgery is the 20th. I am going to try to night wean her and cut back a bit on the nursing (she still nurses A LOT).

I asked if he thought she was in pain, and he said probably. At the very least, her teeth are VERY sensitive. I felt sooooo bad. I mean, I kinda had a feeling (which is why I kept bugging dr until he finally refered me to a pediatric dentist) she was hurting because she almost never smiles (with an open mouth, like most babies) and she doesn't talk much. She hums a lot. Like it hurts to have her mouth open. She also refuses to take bites from food. I have to put little bits in her mouth, like a mother bird.

Sorry this is so rambley, but to think the worst, and then to have a dr tell you your right... I just hope we get through it ok...

Oh the poor baby. I hope she's not in too much pain. You were smart to trust your mother's instincts on this one. I agree with you, I don't see how bm is more harmful than whole milk. I would think water would be the safest bet. Sorry you have to wean. Take your time, maybe just night weaning will help her.

That is horrible. I don't think it's a great idea to wean, maybe night-time, but not totally. You've been doing this for a long time, so don't let them tell you any different. My sister (who's 24 now) doesn't have enamel and I think my brother, too (15). They say it's because my mom didn't drink much milk, or get enough calcium in her diet while pg.
I hope the surgery goes well.

Sorry to hear about the teeth, it made me so sad to read your post. I hope she does well with the capping.

Oh how sad. I wouldn't wean either. I agree that your milk is better than anything else she's getting, and once she gets the caps, the problem should clear. It seems that it's the lack of enamel that's the issue not the milk. I hope it goes as smoothly as possible.

Hi there Shannon. I haven't posted on this board before (too busy on the sleep solutions board ) but I have been lurking here for a while as I am hoping to TTC #2 soon and I am still breastfeeding number one (who's 17months old). Unfortunately I have to have some dental work done so need to wait until that's all finished.

Anyway, I was so sorry to read about your daughter. As someone who has had a lot of dental work done, I really sympathise with both you and her. I'm sure she'll be fine when the caps are done. I was worried about bf and tooth decay too. My dental specialist practically told me off for still bf as he said there is a lot of sugar in bm. I tried finding out about bf and tooth decay and found the following on Dr Sears site http://www.askdrsears.com/faq/bf3.asp I always trust Dr Sears! Right at the end he says about carrying on bfing during the day as long as you wish. I hope it makes things a bit clearer for you.

Hmmm, not sure why that hasn't come up as a link, but I guess you can just cut and paste. for you and Marosa.

p.s. I'll try and post here a bit more often now too!!

Suzey

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that! Poor baby! I was just thinking about her the other day and wondering if you had taken her to the dr yet. I don't think I would wean her totally either, if she's not ready. I would try to cut out the night feeding, but not during the day. But trust your instincts. Do what you think is right.
