Default CIO and teething?

I have read that you are not to try CIO if your little on is teething or sick which makes perfect sense. My 7 month old son is in a constant state of teething it seems with swollen gums, etc. He is waking up alot at night and not napping well...or should I say he is very inconsistant with both so I don't know if it is teething or seperation anxiety, or what.

What do you consider teething? Is is when one is visible? I just don't want to try this if now is not the time because of teething. I am planning on doing more of a Ferber thing than totally CIO.

Any thoughts?

Betsy

Hi Besty, from what I understand, it is the process of getting the teeth to break through which is the most painful. Once they are showing, most babies aren't in pain anymore. So the time to CIO, if you still wanted to do that, would be after they are showing.

BTW, the Hyland's Teething Tablets, seemed to help Rebecca more than any other teething products, including Tylenol. HTH!

Is he just cranking when he wakes up or is he full blown crying/screaming? Noah has started thing waking up every hour or so after he is down for the night for about 3 hours. He just cranks and fusses - we don't go to him unless he starts full on out crying and he always falls back to sleep within a few minutes. He was sick last week and we had a family wedding, so he is all out of sorts.

I think that even if the baby is teething as long as he is just fussing it is ok to leave him. I hope those little toothers pop through soon!

Thanks for the replies fellow Emerald's!!

He doesn't wake up just fussing a bit although he has in the past and gotten himself back to sleep. Now he pretty much goes straight to crying hard. I did try to do Ferber the other night for about 40 minutes and it did no good.

He is just so inconsistant. Some nights he will sleep from 7:30pm until 7am and then others he is up an hour after he was put down and then won't go back to sleep unless he is in bed with us. Naps are just as inconsistant.

It is the inconsistancy that drives me crazy. I spend half my day analyzing what may have caused him to be up or not to have napped that day and I, of course, think it is something I have or have not done!

I know that more consistant days (and nights) will be coming.....I hope!

Thanks again,

Betsy
