Default Can I get rid of this wake-up?

Ryan is almost 9 months old. He goes to bed around 7pm, sleeps til about 4-5am when he wakes up crying and seemingly hungry. I feed him, he usually has about 4-6oz. at this time. Then he goes back down to sleep til about 7am.

How can I get rid of this 4-5am wake-up? I know that he's going a good stretch of 9-10 hours at first, but I really just want to sleep straight through myself. Is this unreasonable to expect of him at this age? I thought that eventually he should sleep the 12 hours straight or is this just wishful thinking on my part?

My first son was SO different in the sleep department, that this is all new territory for me.

Thoughts?

Noah does the EXACT same thing.....I actually have made him wait once or twice until about 6:30. He stayed awake and while he did not cry (he played more than anything), he did not go back to sleep. This means that I was awake anyway and had to get up at 6:30. This threw us off schedule as Noah was then tired. I find it much better to get up and feed/change him at 5 and then he will go back to sleep until 8. I get to go back to sleep too! I am sure you can get rid of the feeding, but then he will wake up earlier. Since you want to sleep through I would try leaving him until you want him to wake up... maybe 6 or 6:30 would work at first. Just gradually work him later and later. I also have a "rule" that if it is dark out (in the morning) Noah is in his crib... I mean that after I feed and change him if he is awake he still goes back to his crib until it is light out... Usually, he will fall back to sleep. Good luck!

I think Weissbluth says that at 9 months any nighttime feedings should be eliminated. I guess I would try CIO at the 4-5am wakeup for a few days and see how it goes ?

Default Re: Can I get rid of this wake-up?

My Son Is 8 Months Old. We Are Going Through The Same Thing With Him And The 5 Am Feeding. When He Was 5 And 6 Months Old He Would Get Up For The 5 Am Feeding, Nurse, And Then Go Right Back To Sleep Until 7 Am. At Around 6 1/2 Months He Became Very Difficult To Get To Go Back To Sleep After That Feeding. I Began To Find That He Would Return To Sleep Much Easier If I Just Got Up And Rocked Him And Returned Him To Sleep With Out Nursing Him. So For About One And A Half Months Now I Have Not Been Feeding Him At 5 Am, I Just Rock Him. I Thought He Would Eventually Sleep Through This Feeding Once He Realized He Wasn't Going To Be Fed At That Time Anymore. But He Has Not. For The Last Week I Have Been Letting Him Cio When He Wakes At 5 Am. It Is Not Going Well. He Continues To Wake At That Time And Will Cry For Up To 1 1/2 Hours. Then When He Does Go Back To Sleep He Will Sleep Until 8 Or 8:30 Which Throws Off The Rest Of The Schedule For The Day. I Am Really Not Sure What To Do Next. I Hate To Go Back To Getting Up And Rocking Him Because That Was Not Solving Anything Either. At Times It Got To Be 1 1/2 Hours Of Rocking Before He Would Return To Sleep. Any Suggestions?? Thank You. Beth
