Is it possible?
This is a discussion on Is it possible? within the Signing to Baby forums, part of the Parenting Babies & Toddlers category; I've been signing "milk" to my daughter before nursing for a long time, and I'm wondering ...
I've been signing "milk" to my daughter before nursing for a long time, and I'm wondering if she could possible be signing it back to me already. She's close to 5 months old, but that just seems so young still. I've noticed in the past 2 days that she sometimes clenches and unclenches her one fist against my shoulder. She doesn't hold it out in front of her, it's sort of like she is trying to scratch me. Today she did it when I was about to feed her and I knew she was hungry. So could she be doing it purposefully already? Or is she just learning to do new movements with her body?

It is possible. Babies babble in sign like they verbally babble, before they start using it in context....so it could be babble or it may be her actually signing.
I think it's possible too. I would just keep watching to see if she does it consistently, or if it was a fluke thing. You know your baby best, and if she seems to be signing, awesome! Whenever she did that I would offer for her to eat, so she kind of gets the correlation.
I also taught my little girl to sign. We didn't start trying until 6 months old and she really never started until 8 months. I have heard of babies signing at 6 months of age. I think it all depends on the child. All I can say is that it has saved us alot of headache...all she has to do is say what she needs and if we can't understand then she signs it. It has been wonderful in our house!!! Good luck!!
I'm wondering the same thing. My DD is only 3 months, but we've been signing "milk" to her since about 2 weeks. This morning I went to get her outt of her crib and she was opening and closing her hand VERY slowly. I didn't think much of it, but she did it again when I got ready to nurse her. Then she did it again when I fed her 3 hours later. My DH thinks it's a coincidence, but I called my sis (whose DD signs) and she said this is EXACTLY how it started!

I think that she is probably giving you the sign for "milk." I did this will my children, along with "more" and they used them quite frequently from about 5 months on. Isn't it exciting watching them learn?
Hi - I am new on this board - I've been posting on the Due in June and Born in June board!
I've been signing with my little guy now really consistently the the past month, and on and off for several months; but nothing yet. However, another lady on our board - her daughter has just started signing milk and she's about 5 months old...(I will say that all the babies I've heard signing that early are girls...hummm)...
