Default need help~ how to sign names

I know the signs for Mom, Dad, Gma, Gpa, Aunt, Uncle, etc. I'd like to start using signs for Katelyn's friends and others actual names. How do you sign for someones name? Surely you wouldn't finger spell it since they can't even read yet?

Good question Wendy!

Based on my experience, "Sign Names" is a part of the Deaf Community...My husband and I and our daughter was given a "sign name" by our deaf students. What she did was use the first letter of the name and make a sign. My name "Amy" is letter "A" and taps her dimple, because I have a dimple.
My daughter Nia is N and makes the sign for "beautiful" because she said that Nia is beautiful.
Now you may want to give your daughter a sign name by using her initial look at your daughter's most "attracting" part of the face, that is the easiest way to make a "sign name".

Or if you know a deaf in your community and ask him or her to give you and your daughter "sign names."

Name signs are often given by the deaf that associates the first letter of the person's name and some other area of the body.
My parents are deaf so since my mother (she can speak but not hear) can't say my daughter's name Sierra correctly she says SK and that is her sign as well. Just the letters SK signed together.
My name, Kimmy, is a K moved back and forth in front of the body. My husbands name Steve is an S tapped to the center of the chest.
So whatever you feel is a good fit for the name then go for it.
The only thing is to make sure the sign is always consistent, so that there is no confusion.
Have fun!
