Default I need encouragement!

Elena will be one year old in a little more than a week - August 7. She's still not signing ANYTHING.

I've cut back to only using 'eat', 'all done', and 'potty' after a friend (who's 14mo old is signing tons) told me it's better to start off with just a few words until they grasp the concept. We had also been doing more, milk, gentle, help, kitty, mama, and papa.

My husband and I sign these words whenever we say them - even if we are talking to each other. As long as she's in the room we sign. We were doing it sporadically from 6 mos, but really started all the time about a month ago. Did we totally mess her up by not being consistent at the beginning?

We are a multi-lingual family so maybe that has something to do with it too, but we use the signs when we say the words in either language.

Please tell me that she'll start soon! It's so wonderful to see my friend and her son - he tells her what he wants and then is happy. (Ok, most of the time. I am a realist. ) I can't wait until we can do that too.

Default Re: I need encouragement!

If it is any help, Kyra did not pick up signs untill she was about 18 months, then she had a sign explosion. Incidentally, it coincided with our use of the signing time videos LOL. Anyway, sometimes they process it, but don't use it. Kyra always knew what I was signing, just didn't sign back.

Good Luck!
