Icon5 What makes you a vegatarian??

Do you have to eat NO meat at all to be a vegetarian?

I eat NO red meat, steak, anything like that. However, I do eat chicken. And on occassion a McDonald's burger... but it's fake to me, and doesn't taste like meat at all.

Do you guys eat any meat? Or are you totally against it? Are there different degrees of being a vegetarian?

(sorry if this is a silly question!)

No thats not a silly question

Yes there are several degrees of vegetarian. A complete vegetarian will eat no meat, includes chicken and fish.
here are some some classifications of degress of vegetarians

a pescatarian- will eat fish
vegan- no animal products at all
ovo lacto- eats milk and eggs
lacto vegetarian- uses milk
semi vegetarian- eats less meat

I mainly just say I'm a vegetarian. I don't eat meat. (with exception this year when I was pregnant, I craved fish and ate it a few times) I also don't use milk, very little dairy products at all, on ocaasion I'll have eggs. I'm not totally against eating meat. I don't frown upon people for doing it. It's my personal belief that meat consumption is highly over rated nowadays and the current state of our farming of meats need to change. The health of our world depends upon it. Also with the increased use of antibiotics and hormones that they inject into animals, this is what I am against. It's not healthy for us and I believe especially Americans need to revamp their eating style (not just with meat but everything else) I know most people are aware or don't care about it but I hope that will change someday before it's too late.

Being a vegan seems very hard to me. I wish I could do it. LOL I am a lacto ovo vegetarian. I eat milk and eggs (well eggs kinda gross me out but I use them to cook with in recipes all the time).

Vegan is hard at first, especially if you are used to milk and dairy products/eggs. I first cut out milk, replaced with soy or rice milk. Then cheese, I use alternates. They make egg replacer that you can used instead of eggs. Some recipes don't work as well with them but some you can't even tell the difference. I noticed a big improvement in my health when I cut out dairy.

Cool. I've heard alot of people say they feel better off of dairy. It makes sense since cows milk was made for cows and we were not made to digest it like a cow does. We do use rice milk for alot of things but some thing I wont give up, like plain natural yogurt because of the probiotics, etc. I like to use kefir for smoothies too. I am sort of anti-soy (real soy beans every once in a while okay but no fake meats or "Silk" or any of that) so I think it would be hard for me to be a total vegan. LOL

Me too. I can't stand the consistancy and texture of eggs. It reminds me of mucus. I will eat them in cooked foods though, as long as I'm not the one cooking it. Out of sight, out of mind I guess.
I'm lacto-ovo also. I do use Silk soy milk for cereal. I have never liked the taste of cow's milk and haven't drank the stuff since I was a kid.
I prefer products like Garden Burgers rather than Boca or Morningstar Farms. I like the more veggie-tasting stuff.
I stopped eating beef and pork around 12 years ago and ate very small amounts before that. I ate turkey and chicken occasionally until less than a year ago. I never have liked seafood or any other meat like rabbit or duck, so that wasn't an issue.
Meat grosses me out, but I don't judge people who eat it. I don't think they should eat it, but that's my opinion and it's not my place to force that on anyone.
