What now?
Hi, all
Just wanted to check in with a question... I have unfortunately been diagnosed with my second ectopic. This one we at least caught before it can rupture. I go in for methotrexate tomorrow.
How is the methotrexate injection?
Have any of you had recurrent ectopics? What did you do next? My doc says I need to move on to IVF or adoption...
Thanks!
Karen

Re: What now?
Awww, I'm so sorry Karen. :tears That must be so hard.
I had the MTX injection two years ago. Supposedly the side effects aren't supposed to be too bad, but unfortunately for me that wasn't the case. I was nauseaus and I had the worst gas of my life. They hadn't warned me...and so I ended up the next day in ER thinking my tube had burst. I had this pain every night for almost a month.... They will or should monitor your hcg levels until they drop to 0. Hopefully, you'll only need one shot.
You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Please let us know how you are doing.

Re: What now?
Thanks, Kathy!
I have read some pretty nasty things about methotrexate, but nothing 'real life.' I guess I should be prepared for the abdominal pain afterwards. I have had a rupture before, and am not looking forward to anything that resembles that experience!!

Re: What now?
Karen - I hope it wasn't too awful for you today!!! You've been in my thoughts all day.
Just wanted to make sure you knew to stop taking all folic acid...meaning no prenatals until your betas drop to 0. My stupid MD never told me that.
I hope you don't have any nasty side effects!!!!

Re: What now?
Actually, since my u/s showed nothing (in the tube or in the uterus) and my beta is still so low, I'm kind of in a holding pattern. The doc still suspects it was ectopic based on how the numbers changed, but is going with the wait-and-see for the next couple of days since I don't seem to be in danger of rupture. The rollercoaster is so frustrating, but I'm not going to wish for a shot of MTX that I don't need! I had read about the folic acid, but my doc hadn't mentioned it either! Thanks for telling me...
I'll let you know how things go.

I'll be hoping and praying your numbers continue to decrease.

Re: What now?
I think I'm going to be able to get through this without treatment, which makes me soooo happy! My beta was down to only 77 yesterday; progesterone was 3.2. The doc thinks I might make it down to 0 this week...
I think we'll take a ttc break and decide later what our next steps are. I'm going to have to move on to a fertility specialist now, but I'm not in a huge rush just yet...
I'll keep you posted!

Re: What now?
Karen,
I'm so sorry that you are going through this. I hope you don't need the MTX shot, but I am very sorry that this PG didn't work out. {{HUGS}}
I see that you are from New Jersey, and I glad to see that if you do have to go IVF, that it is covered by insurance. Here is a websight with info. http://www.resolve.org/main/national...&tag=insurance

Re: What now?
Karen, I'm so sorry you're having to go through this again It's just not fair! I hope you don't have to have the Meth. BUT if you do, I had the shot w/mine 2 years ago(today actually) and didn't really have any side effects...I went ahead and ruptured though, so read into that what you will And yes, I had to read about the folic acid, too. My doc didn't tell me either.
I should be lurking more often now that I'm back from vacation, so I'll keep checking on ya!

Re: What now?
Hi, Lisa!! I didn't recognize your new name... CONGRATS!! I see you got your BFP; that's awesome!
I am feeling MUCH better today. My numbers are dropping and the bleeding finally came, so I feel like I'm going to be able to get this behind me. I'm going to make an appt. with my new RE, but schedule it in September to give myself some more time. I'm not sure how I feel about IVF for sure, but I know immediately after another ectopic is not the time to try to decide anything. My doc does want to go ahead with the removal of my right tube, too, so that may be coming up sooner than anything. I'll wait to see what the RE says before doing anything, though...
Cindy -- thanks for that site. It's great!
Kathy -- thanks for the prayers. I think they've been working!!!

Re: What now?
I'm glad things seem to be resolving themselves on their own. I hope everything continues to go smoothly.
You are so right...this is not the time to make any decisions. I remember how emotional I was after each of my losses...especially my second one. I was all ready to give up.
Take it easy...sounds like you have a game plan.
