Hi,

I havent been on these boards in a couple years but decided to come back and get some info about ectopic pregnancy's...Here is what happened...
I thought AF had started back on Nov 26th and just did the norm...Then i started feeling breast tenderness and Af was lasting longer than usual...About 10 days into what i thought was af i called my RE and they said i was probably having a miscarriage and there wasnt really anything they could do I hadnt been to see them in over a year so they made me an appointment for Dec 29th to follow up...At that point my DH talked me into calling my primary care Doc so i did and they brought me in the next day did a pelvic exam and found that my uterus was bulky and my cervix was open more than normal so they sent me for blood work and an ultrasound that day...Turns out bhcg was at 7492 which confirmed i was pregnant...However when they did the ultra sound they couldnt find a sack in the uterus so they suspected it might be a ectopic pregnancy...They told me to call my RE right away and see what they wanted me to do....So I called the RE and they said they wanted to see me now instead of the 29th of Dec like we had scheduled...I went in the next morning and they did b/w and another u/s and my bchg went up again to 9234 but they couldnt find anything in the uterus either...They had me come back two days later for more b/w and my bhcg went up again to 12478 and with the amount of hemorraging i had been having and not finding anything in the uterus they said the only thing we can do is treat you with methotrexate and hope that the tube doesnt rupture...I went in on Dec 15th and got and injection of the methotrexate to terminate the pregnancy...I was feeling ok until Dec 22nd which was a week later...I had terrible cramping and i couldnt walk, I had to stay in the fetal position and my husband rushed home to take me to the ER...Got there and they did more b/w and another u/s to see if the tube had ruptured which all they really said they could see is a mass on the right side and they would need to send me to their main hospital by ambulance right away for emergency surgery...I was terrified and in so much pain and they couldnt give me any pain medicine until i got to the main hospital...so 35 minutes later we arrive downtown at the main hospital and a resident dr. comes in to do a pelvic exam and see if indeed i did have a ruptured tube and to rule out any other problems...She also said my cervix was quite swollen and tender and they would probably have to do surgery...She sent over the surgeon that was on call which luckily happened to be the director of their ob-gyn program to said to me that he reviewed my u/s and that the right tube was leaking a bit but it hadnt ruptured yet...He then gave me two options they could go in and remove the tubal preganancy which is what my RE recommended they do she also said it would be in my best interest to remove both tubes so that it didnt happen again...I told the ER dr. no way do i want you to remove both tubes and then he gave me another option of having a second dose of methotrexate and wait it out over night to see if we could get the bhcg to come down...I decided to wait it out and pass on the surgery if they could just get me out of pain a little bit...They gave me the second dose and put me on a light dose of morphine not too much just in case the tube ruptured they wanted me to be aware of any increase in pain...I stayed in the hopital two days and my bhcg went down to 6462 and they wanted to keep me thru the next few days but it was christmas and i just wanted to go home...They released me on Dec 24th and told me to be careful even though it seemed the methotrexate is now working the tube could still rupture at anytime...They gave me some tylenol 3's and motrin 650mg for pain...It just takes the edge off a little...It still hurtsw to walk around or sit in certain postions and my whole stomach is so tender to touch...and it hurts like crazy to go to the restroom....The Doc said the methotrexate can cause all this pain...I wish i had known that before i got the second injection...I go back this Friday the 29th of Dec to see if the bhcg fell some more...I'm still at risk of the tube rupturing until the level falls negative....This is really scary and very painful and I was just wondering if anyone out there is familular with methotrexate or has had a tubal pregnancy...This is the worst pain i have experienced in my entire life and I just want to feel better...Not to mention the emotional toll it has taken on me...We have been ttc for almost 10 years now...I had a miscarriage two years ago this month and i was 11 weeks...I guess December is just a bad month for me...If anyone can offer any info or support it would be greatly appreciated...I'm sorry that i have pratically written a book on here...it just that know one knows what im going through right now and i was hoping to find someone on these boards who might understand....Thanks for taking the time to read this thread...God Bless you and Happy Holidays....Sherri

Sherri, im so sorry about your lost. I found out I was pregnant on Oct 11, 2006 and on Oct. 31, 2006 I found out that it was ectopic, it was in my left tube so I had surgery and they removed my left tube, I still have both my ovaries and my right tube. I can't believe they wanted to remove both tubes, their is a chance that the next pregnancy could result in another ectopic but usually (most) women go on to have healthy pregnancies. My doctor suggested that i wait one cycle before trying to conceive again, and now im waiting to test.

I went back to work 2 days after my surgery and i had no pain, and i never had to take any of my pain killers.

First off, I hope you're feeling better. If the pain is still there, I'd suggest you go back and have them look to make sure you're tube's not ruptured. I honestly can't believe they would give you the option of methotrexate this late in your pregnancy - especially when it didn't work the first time. They should be monitoring you much more closely than making you wait almost a week to see if your betas go down.

When I had my ectopic I had surgery at 6 weeks and my tube was so badly damaged at that point that it had to be removed.

I also agree with the previous poster. There is no reason for them to remove both tubes. With my surgery, they removed only the left (damaged) tube. Both my ovaries and my right tube were not damaged and they left them in. Unless the other tube is damaged they don't need to remove it.

I had to take a 2 month break from TTC in order for my body to heal. I was able to get pregnant a few months later with my one tube- I'm due in April and everything's going fine so far.

I hope you're feeling better. Please update to let us know how you're doing.

HI,

Thanks for replying to my post...I'm starting to feel a little better today...Af has lightened up and the cramping is gone...Now i just have a lot of soreness and pressure in and around my abdomen...Hopefully I will continue to feel better over the next couple days...I do go back on Friday for bhcg again and hopefully it has went down all the way....I'm not sure why they gave me the second option they just said it would be less evasive and the methotrexate works most of the time...I'm just one of the few who experience the pain it can cause...lucky me i guess...i am glad however that they didnt have to do the surgery...maybe i will have a better chance of conceiving in a couple months or so....I just pray i dont ever have to go through anything like this ever again....Now im terrified of having another ectopic....My RE has even recommended just doing IVF to prevent a tubal again....I'm not sure where to go from here...I guess i will just leave it in God's hands for now....Thanks for you support....I truly appreciate it....Kind Regards, Sherri

Sherri, just saw your post and wanted to let you know how sorry I am that you have had to go through this and that you have had so much pain. I just went through an ectopic pregnancy myself and I know how difficult both physically and emotionally it can be. We have been trying for over 2 years to have a child an nothing worked. So, in Oct. we did IVF. Then the roller coaster begain. At first we were told it was a chemical pregancy, but when I went back for follow up blood work my hcg had skyrocketed (so DH and I thought is was some sort of miricle). The day before Thanksgiving they did an ultra sound and did not find anything in the uterus and decided it was ectopic. I had a D & C and two shots of methotrexate. My hcg went up after the shots and I almost had to take another one, but eventually it started declining. I went last friday and my levels are now close to zero. Even with the one round, I was in a lot of pain, so I can't imagine what you went through. I just wanted share my experience with you and let you know I am here for you. I feel the same way about not knowing what to do next. I just keep thinking, well at least I got pregnant, just in the wrong place.

Thanks CC...I'm sorry to hear that you had IVF and it ended in a ectopic..I'm sure that was very hard on you and your DH....My RE wants me to try IVF next and just forgot ever trying naturally...She thinks that I will continue to have ectopics and that my tubes are just to damaged now...IVF is just so costly i hear...I have an appt on Jan 7th to go over the procedure and other options as well...I didnt really even know you could still have an ectopic with IVF...I will definetaly be asking my RE alot of questions....Thank you for your reply...Best of luck to you and your DH...God Bless you!

I am very sorry to hear about the EP...
and I am so glad you didn't let them take both of your tubes...
Sounds like your beginning to heal and that is a great thing.
I am hoping your next pg will be a viable pg and you go on to have a healthy happy 9 months...
