Hi, I'm Konny and my family may be relocating to the Houston area. My dh told me about a town called Friendswood that he'd like to live in and he'd work in Houston.
However I asked on another board if any of the Texas mamas were familiar with the area and what they though- they all HATE Houston!!
Does anyone here actually LIKE it there?
I was told about the heat/humidity, bugs, rainstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, traffic, and they said the gulf in that area is nasty.
Can it be THAT bad?
Please share . .thank you!
I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons at this point, but it'd be nice if I heard some good things other than the positives I already knew about.

I grew around the Houston and Austin areas. I've been living in the Houston area as an adult, married w/ children for the past 8 years and I've grown to like it. I don't love it, but I like it. I love Austin and would rather be there, but I've made a life here and I enjoy it. Friendswood is a great area to live in. I actually live 10 mins from Friendswood in Pearland. The school districts in both towns are outstanding. Friendswood is on the southside of town near Clear Lake and Nasa. The commute into downtown isn't that bad from this area of town. I like Pearland b/c it's suburbia, but only 30 minutes from downtown and Galleria. My commute into work everyday is only 35 minutes, which for Houston is great. If you do move to Houston don't move to Sugarland, Katy, off 290 west or the Woodlands b/c the drive will kill you. Those freeways or horribly congested. I've found everywhere I've ever lived has it's pros and cons, and Houston is the same way. I like that I live in a smaller community but yet I can drive 30 minutes and get all the culture and shopping I want. Plus Galveston isn't that bad. The beaches are way cleaner than when I was a kid.
HTH,
Sandra
I just read your post, if you are still looking at the Houston area, Missouri City is alright. Far enough away from the city, yet close enough to everything that you would need. We have been here in Texas for 2 years now, and my family has adjusted well to it. We live in Sienna Plantation, which came highly recommended to us. Take a look at thier web site. www.siennaplantation.com, it really is a great community, wonderful schools here and an awesome swim park for the kids. Actually, we have 3 different pools here for recreational use, tennis courts, a golf course. You name it they have it here. Our 3 children love it here. Houston has so much to do and see, that there is always something for our family to do. Yes, at times the Gulf in this area is not the prettiest, we have been to the beaches in Galveston and have had a very nice time.
the schools here in Fort Bend County are really great. An easy way for your husband to get into downtown would be to take the new Fort Bend Tollway, which is just right down the road a few miles off of highway 6.
Well, I hope that some of this info. will help you. One thing to keep in mind, I know that the Pearland area had some major issues on flooding a few years back. I believe that they are in a 100 year flood plain, just something to keep in mind.
Good luck to you and your family.
Thanks ladies! We are actually moving to Pearland in a few weeks. DH is out there right now looking at houses and he'll be really close to work which is nice. It'll be a major change for us, but I think it'll be great!

I hardly ever visit here anymore, but I am in the Woodlands and I love it here. Houston is a different story, but once you get used to the heat and mosquitoes then nothing will bother you about being here.
Good luck...I hope you made your move safely!!
EGAD! We are also contemplating a move to Houston. Looking at living in the NNW area. Hubby will be working downtown. I love in a state that has a population of 500.000 so if we do love it will be a complete change.....
Hi Terri,
This board is so slooow, I haven't been here for awahile.
Anyway, we really love it here!!!! No one can seem to believe that we like it here better than SoCal, LOL!!!

It looks like we are moving in June to the Houston area.
We are concerned about school curriculum. That is priority...well that and not living anywhere near Greenspoint (Gunspoint). My DH used to live in Houston in his swinging hot single days and vows not to have us live near there.
He doesn't have much knowledge of South Houston (Friendswood, Pearland, & Missouri City). We are focusing on the Cypress area but these other three may be just right, too.
Any info on schools would be greatly appreciated. We have an 11 yr old and a 2.5 yr old.
Hi Aynde. You might want to try the Texas Education Agency's website for info on school districts. http://www.tea.state.tx.us/perfreport/account/ Emma will start school next August but we've heard from people at church that have school aged children that Pearland is supposed to be good. Good luck with your decision!

hi konny, i am so glad you like it here. it's not so bad. just hot, but i like the heat.
aynde, good luck in your search for a new home. terri made a great suggestion about checking out the TEA website. i grew up in Friendswood and later served as a substitute teacher there and in Pearland. Both are great school districts. i have also taught in Alief ISD and now in Katy ISD, but i live in Fort Bend ISD. Katy and FB are both excellent districts. we live near the new Westpark tollroad, so the commute to downtown is amazingly quick... you just have to pay for it. also, they are re-doing I-10 so that headache should ease soon. 290 is still pretty bad for traffic though.
good luck!
Greetings from a TX newbie! I gre up in College Station and now live in Austin. I've always really loved Austin. As far as the classic Texas climate, I guess if it's something you're already used to you don't notice it as much. I much prefer sweltering heat over freezing cold but I know not everyone feels the same. I have friends who went to school in Friendswood. They say it's a good school system. A bit off-topic, but one place I do like a lot in Houston is the Chocolate Bar. You'll feel heavy but content upon leaving.
I've lived in Pearland since Sept. 98'. My 11 year old daughter Lyndsey has been in Pearland schools her entire life. They are great. One of the reasons we moved here.
Hi everyone,
I too will be moving to the Houston area, as soon as my house sells here in NY. We will actually be in the area as of next week looking for a house. We are planning to look in the Spring area.
Sam
Well, it's been nearly a year since anyone posted on this thread, but I'm going to put my 2 cents worth in anyway, just in case someone else is moving to the Houston area and looking for more advice!
We have lived in Katy for over 3 years now and LOVE it. The schools are superior and the people are fantastic. We officially live in "Old Town Katy" or "Katy Proper", which has a small town feel, but "Katy" actually encompasses a much wider area. With Katy Mills Mall just across I-10, you're never more than 10 minutes away from anything you could possibly want!
