CPSC, Simplicity Inc. Announce Recall of Graco Branded Aspen Cribs for
Suffocation Risk
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in
cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary
recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Aspen 3 in 1 Cribs, sold under the Graco Trademark
Units: About 104,000
Manufacturer: Simplicity Inc., of Reading, Pa.
Hazard: The screws on the wooden mattress support can come loose
allowing a portion of the mattress to fall, posing a suffocation hazard
to young children.
Incidents/Injuries: Simplicity Inc. has received 14 reports of the
mattress support coming loose, including eight reports of entrapment.
Five injuries have been reported including scratches and bruises to the
face and head, a strained neck and a report of a child turning blue.
Description: The recalled cribs are made of wood and have a wooden
mattress support. Only cribs with wooden mattress supports and with
model number 8740KCW SC and serial number 2803 SC to 1605 are included
in this recall. The model and serial number are printed on the envelope
attached to the mattress support.
Sold at: Department stores, and children's product stores from August
2003 through May 2005 for about $130.
Manufactured in: China
Remedy: Consumers should call Simplicity Inc. to receive a retrofit
kit.
