Default Pms

Ok here's a question for everyone. How do you deal with PMS without taking any meds? My PMS is so evil when I'm not on bcp's. I get really, really, MEAN! lol
I always know that I'm not pregnant because everything makes me mad. When I'm pregnant I'm emotional or sad but not mean. I don't like to take meds. I'm about a week away from PMS now but...and I hope I don't get it but I'm planning ahead.
I always exercise and this helps a little. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

OMG! I am the EXACT same way. I know when I don't need to even bother testing because I get really cold-feeling a few days before AF is due and the next day or two I am a total witch! My poor husband and son... When I was pregnant I was over-emotional and would burst into tears and I thought I just had a really wacky severe PMS that month. I don't know if that is how I'll be next time I get pregnant too (if I ever do again), but I can totally relate! I just try to get some time to myself on those days. It usually only lasts about 2 days for me and my husband at least knows how to deal with it. My son isn't really old enough to understand it yet, but I think I am ok at controlling myself around him so far. *deep breaths* hehehe

Well, I try to keep in mind that pms is a time where all my senses are peaked...
I can use this for good, (as in working on my esoteric arts etc), or i can allow it to take over and turn me into a b*tch... which happens easily, lol... three teenagers and a baby, three cats a dog and a husband.. OH BOY!!!
PMS can be a very creative time... if you are an artist or musician, you may find that the creativity flows like crazy... the filter that we usually have up is lowered and although that means many things bother us that normally we can detach from, this also means that we can get in better touch with our creativity. We just need to find our space... away from things that are driving us bonkers....

What if everything drives us crazy? lol
I will try to get away and have alone time if I feel it coming on this month. Thanks for the info.
I'll try being creative too.

yeah, it makes it hard when everything drives us crazy.
One thing that helps me daily, (helped to disperse my panic attacks as well) was a good, well absorbing calcium/magnesium pill. The magnesium helps to calm the body, ease palpitations,it is a well overlooked mineral. The calcium helps to replace that which we lose by being menstruating women, also helps with cramps.Should be in capsule or liquid form, not pill form, as pills take too long to absorbe.
Ease up on the carbs.
The carbs we crave during pms, whether it be cereal, icecream, pasta, potatoes and such, cause our blood sugar to peak and then crash, leading to violent mood swings. Try to add protein any time you are REALLY craving the carbs, or best yet, avoid them all together. Stick to whole grains if you are a carb-o-holic. (even the sugar free products cause our bodies to react as though getting sugar)
Obvious things, reduce the caffeine, make sure you are well rested, spoil yourself with nice baths, good books, etc... try to realize that pms isnt your enemy, see it as a high energy that needs an outlet, (like the creative aspect) just try to have your family far away when you are trying to be creative,
When pms causes our sensitivity filter to drop, and we get bombarded with emotion, it can be really tough. Just remember, that as easily as those disturbances get through to us, our creative, fluid energetic self can also come into being.

Oh yes, the carb cravings. Not cool....I'm usually a health nut but around that time of the month I definitely eat more. Thanks for all the good advice. I've never thought about pms in the way that you described it. Calcium/Mag ok if you already have an RX for prenatal? I know mine has some calcium but not sure how much.

calcium for ttc or pregnant female is about 1000---1200mg/day. Usually a prenatal only contains a few hundred.
I take an additional supplement, because i avoid large amounts of dairy, in order to keep yeast under control.
My prenatal is i THINK 200 chelated calcium and 100 chelated magnesium. (chelated is a special process that helps the mineral to be better absorbed) Each capsule of my supplement is 125mg calcium/62mg magnesium... so i take usually three a day of those. one with each meal.
My 13 year old takes them also to help keep him calm at school. (apparently 80% of male children diagnosed with adhd are deficient in magnesium)
I keep my supplement intake at about 1000 or slightly under, as i do eat some cheese and some veggies that contain calcium.

oh kristi i can so relate. i suffer from PMDD and dearly miss my meds. the best thing for me is vitamins and a sense of humor. i can be yelling at the top of my lungs and know that this is not me and at least have the common sense to start cracking up laughing. DH sometimes gets it, knows to keep my comfort foods on hand and is always willing to give a back rub if it will keep him from getting his head snapped off.

Sorry you have to go through that Nicole. I think it's important how you stated that you try to keep a good sense of humor. Despite how serious our emotions feel they are only feelings produced by hormones! lol
Comfort foods and chick flicks work well for me. I'm so glad DH isn't going to be here during my PMS. I can usally control it around the kids but I tend to take it all out on him. Of course now that I have some great advice on how to handle it maybe it won't be as bad.
