My friend who has a 20 mth old son is 18 days past her period. She normally has it every 28 days and very heavy. She has taken several home pregnancy tests. One of which came out positive with a very faint line. Two blood bhcg tests the first one was < 1.0 and the second 1 the dr said till it said 5 that it was negative. She has all the symptoms like she did with her son of being pregnant. Has anyone been through anything like this and if so how long did it take to get a positive pregnancy test? She is worried that something could be wrong and her dr isnt doing anything except to keep telling her to wait and see if she is just late. Thanks for your time.

It might be that she skipped a period. Sometimes that can happen. Its actually more common than one might think. It could be that. Best wishes to your friend!

It may just be a fluke. Esp when you're in the post partum time frame (I speak like I'm an expert ), your periods can be wonky.

However, some people do not get their until several weeks in to the pregnancy... even blood tests. I'd say to give it another week, then try either an HPT or blood test again. Never know...

She doesn't breastfeed any more, and she was on the birth control pill yaz, Her periods have been like clock work since she got them back which was pretty quick since she wasn't able to breast feed for long. I will keep you updated. Thanks for responding! If you find out any more info or if anyone else has anything......let me know so I can pass it on. She is hoping she is and it is driving her nuts not knowing!!!

Anything under 5 is a definite neg.
hcg doubles every two days approximately, and implantation occurs at app. one week before your period is due. so if she is ovulating regularly, by even a week past her period due date, the hcg should be in the thousands, not less than one.
So unfortunately, she may have had an annovulatory cycle and skipped a period.
I hope she gets her bfp soon.
Also, a progesterone blood test can show if she did indeed ovulate.

I had a blood test when I was 5 weeks pregnant with my son that came back neg. However, I don't know which test they did....the one that gives the number, or the one that detects the presence of hcg.

More likely however, she didn't ovulate this cycle. Being on bcp as well as having a young child can really play havoc with one's cycle. If she skips a second period, she should really have a through exam from her gyn.

Thanks for all the advice girls! She had another blood test today and it is still coming back negitive, but now the hospital is saying it is possible that she has a tubal pregnancy as that will sometimes not show a positive with the hcg. She has to go back for further testing. She is so upset I don't really know what to say to her. I am trying to just be there when she needs to talk, but I feel like I should have these great words of wisdom to share with her ya know? I will post more as I hear from her. Thanks again girls!!
