I am feeling more human again today. I must apologize for my absence but I havent been feeling the best as you can imagine.
We had our appointment with the geneticist yesterday ... this is how we got on...
I had been ill the last day and a half with a tummy upset brought on by the stress of it all so I was feeling pretty fragile when I got there.
The doctor was nice so we had no concerns at all in that respect. he drew out a full family tree and asked us a million questions. he explained all about the particular hormones they found in my blood, which is one of three they test for. He said he was worried about chromosonal abnormailities in the baby and the hormones detected to one of three spinal conditions. Anything above a risk foctor of 1in250 is considered high ours was 1in4. So on talking this over he suggested it would be better that we did have the amniocentsis, we were having second thoughts the last week or two, so at least we are prepared for what lies ahead, if anything ... and from his point of view then he would know too what they are dealing with. We didnt feel forced to do it in any way but together Roy and I decided the amnio was for the best.
we had the u/s first. they were looking for what they call soft markers and because baby is only 17 weeks it was hard to tell if there were any present of not. the spinal scan was inconclusive as well. So once again they asked us if we were sure about the amnio and we both agreed.
The amnio wasnt good! I wouldnt do it again that is for sure, I opted for the local anaesthetic in my belly as my skin is sore and bruised from my heparin injections. nowadays they dont give the local as the procedure is fairly quick (normally), the local doesnt numbe the urterus and that is the painful part. Well I am glad I did have it as they had to repeat the procedure three times. They managed to get the placenta first time which made blood in the amniotic fluid, the second time they somehow didnt get punched through the uterus wall far enough and you could see the bulge on the scn ..it was pretty hirrible, third time - they got the right place but had to draw up two syringes of fluid until it ran clear *sigh*. I dont know why these things arent simple.
And to make things even better they said my odds of m/c after the procedure was 1 in 50 in light of the pv bleeding I had had. So the doc prescriped me 3 days rest and then we finally got to go home after two hours in the place.
they did what they call a FISH test, this is a preliminary test that looks at the most common ailments .. it takes two to three days normally but this is easter so we may not hear till friday. the rest of the test can take up to three weeks. I am not over worried about the results as I am sure they will be okay but you know you still have to go through the motions of finding out.
my pics ...
first one baby is sitting on the screen - on the right is his/her bottom and her ankles are together on the left. Can you see any boy or girl parts?

here is the head, you can see the eyes
