This is a discussion on Best basal thermometer? within the Charting forums, part of the Trying to Conceive - General Discussion category; I also followed Shannon's link over! Thanks, Shannon! (And congrats again!)
I'm ready to start charting...but a ...
Walmart...8.88 I round it to the nearest 10th( so 97.44 would be 97.4 and 97.47 would be 97.5, etc) Then you can start right away, and we can obsess with you
I did use a regular ole' thermometer for a while, but my 3yo decided it was a toy and wore out the batteries one night(early morning, while I decided to let him in exchange for another hour of sleep ) Anyway, I figured I'd go for the basal this time. It didn't really make a difference with my temps, the biggest thing for me, is I sometimes sleep with my mouth open, so I have to remember to close my mouth
BTW, you don't have to round, you can put the 100th, but it's close enough to accurate to the 10th..they are only accurate to the 10th anyway, per the box, so I'm not really sure why they even have the 100th...
Thanks! I have to run to WalMart anyhow (I hate that place, but our cats LOVE their cat food, weird, I know).
So, I'm on my second PPAF right now. I assume I can just start temping, even though it's not the first day of my period, right? FF didn't specifically address that. Also, it'll make charting my cm a bit difficult for a few days, but I'm anxious to start.
I told DH I was doing it so we'd know when NOT to do it, as he's freaking re: a second baby! No, I wouldn't do anything without his consent, but I figure I'll understand what I'm doing by the time he comes around! And then perhaps we can time everything just right!
I have always used a regular thermometer and I actually just bought a new one after the twins were born, bc the kids were kind enough to break my last one (and actually the one before that as well!)
It was 4.99 at Walgreens (measures to the 10th of a degree which is the most important for charting) and it seems to work well-although I would prefer my chart was a little prettier or simpler to figure out, but thats not the thermometers fault!!! :

You can start temping asap, no matter where you are in the cycle, but sometimes fertility friend can be a little picky about ovuation if it doesn't feel you have given enough temps prior to o. Don't worry though, we will all obsess over your chart for you!

OK, one last question....(or not, we'll see)...about when to temp?
E usually wakes around 4:30 to eat and then sometimes again around 6:30. I might snooze after that, but I'm up around 7 am for good. Unless I take it at 4:30, that wouldn't give me at least 3 hours of sleep before temping...
A lot of women don't chart during AF, but it's recommended that you do, at least the first few cycles to give you a fuller picture of your cycle Unless your AF is long, or you notice lots of EWCM mixed with it, you don't have to chart cm while she's visiting Some women have a tad amount of fertile cm coming off of AF(as well as the 24hours before-hand), so you can watch for that, but don't be surprised if you don't get it, and/or it doesn't stay.
Do you mind if I ask how long your BF cycles have been?
I would take it at 4:30. I take mine when my dh gets up(whether the kids do or not) and try to do it within a half an hour-hour of the same time, or else my numbers can get pretty off-and not always the direction you'd think
Well, I guess I've only had one cycle, if you will (the time between the first PPAF and second PPAF). I started the first PPAF on April 10 and the second PPAF on May 19. So, way more than 28 days. Is that a bad sign? It was 39 days...
The first PPAF was about 8 days of heavy bleeding, although it was my first AF in 14 months. This one is on day 3 and isn't nearly as heavy as the first, but heavier than I'm used to. However, these are my first two AFs after being on bc pills for 8+ years, so I'm not even used to a 'normal' AF.
Ask away...I'm not shy!!! And I'm so curious to know now if I'm actually Oing or not...
I would take it after the first wakeup. I try to take mine all at 6 am when the babies wake up, but today I woke up earlier at 4:30 am, just bc I was anxious about my temp. I definately get the most accurate temp after my first wakeup though (as long as its around the same time). Just make sure you don't move around much before taking temp (I keep my thermometer under my pillow so I can wake up and take temp relatively quickly).

I have a home day care and three days a week one kiddo comes at 5:30. So, because of that, I take my temp at 5 am every day. Days I can get up later, I just take it, throw the thermom back on the night stand and roll over back to sleep.
Theres no reason why you cant start to chart your temps now. If anything itll get you into the habbit.
As far as what actual thermom to use --- I used a store brand from Walgreens when ttc ds. One feature that was great was that it had a memory that stored the last temp read. It was great for early morning readings when I wanted to go back to sleep and save the charting for later in the day.
