Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
Karla Homolka Wakes Up As a Free Woman Today
For the first time in 12 years, Karla Homolka is waking up a free woman. The schoolgirl killer has served her time. Two hours after being released, Homolka spoke to the French media. Homolka said she doesn't want to be hounded down, and that she does not want people to think she's dangerous. She slipped away almost unnoticed from Sainte Anne des Plaines Institution yesterday afternoon, passed the media that had been waiting days for a glimpse of Canada's most notorious female killer. Now that she's free, her courtroom battles are just beginning. Homolka was not granted a second request for a media ban. The judge says Homolka should be prepared to defend her point of new the week of July 25th. Homolka has said she fears for her life if people know her whereabouts.

Re: Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
She may be sick but she's done her time. I think she has legitimate fears about her life (yes, I know she killed two people) and has every right to go to court to stop the media from hounding her. The real "tell" of her true personality, though, is the fact that she granted an interview as soon as she left prison. She doesn't want to be left alone. She wants to stay in the spotlight -- hence the request for the media ban. What better way to stay front and centre than complain that you want to be left alone?
The media should stay away from her and stop giving her the attention that she feeds on. She's under court watch and that's what she should be under. Give the French's and Mahaffey's some peace from all this breathless reporting of her every move.

I do not think she should even be out!!! And to think the only way she will end up back there is by killing again, which frankly I wouldn't count on her NOT doing!!!

Re: Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
I watched the entire interview on a repeat broadcast this morning. IMO she served her time and she should be left alone. She seemed sincere to me in the things that she said...maybe she is just a really good actress.
I think that she is wise to try to start a new life here in Quebec. I think that for the most part, people here will leave her alone. She would definitely not go unnoticed in Ontario.

I agree she should be left alone if she's done her time but I think people have the right to know where she is so they can be more careful, I wouldn't want to have her living in my neighbourhood and not know about it.

Re: Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
Well I am sorry, I don't beleave that she has done her time, she had just as much part in the murders of those girls as he did, I think that we should know where she is at all time, so that we can protect our family.
I have followed this story from the beginning and she could of left our called the police, everyone knows right from wrong no love has that much hold on you,
I am sorry 12 years is not long enough for murder.

Re: Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
Do you ladies really and truly feel that 12 years is good for the torture and murder that these girls went through??? I think that more ppl are going to go through with murdering others just because they know they will get a slap on the wrist and get a small sentence like she did.
Could you imagine going through this in your family?? I know that i would be very very angry at her release, I guess I am just putting myself in the families shoes.

Re: Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
I don't condone what she did, but from what I understand, they wanted to nail Paul Bernardo so she gave them what they wanted in return for a lighter jail sentence. Apparently she portrayed herself as a helpless follower in these murders (which I don't believe she was), but a deal is a deal and she served her full sentence.
We should be upset with the people who came up with the plea bargain. I agree that people go to jail for more time than she did for lesser crimes, and it's unfortunate that kind of stuff happens all the time.

Re: Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
Of course I don't think 12 years is enough, but I still hope the press doesn't hound her because honestly, I don't want to have to stomach hearing about her all the time (and I'm sure the families of her victims want to hear about her even less). Plus, as noted, I think she would like the attention. I didn't know she did an interview. What a bum she's making of herself...making a big to do about privacy and then blabbing to whoever interviewed her. How transparent is that?

Re: Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
I am not going to comment on the time she had done, and the unfairness of her trial, etc, but I can tell you guys the lasting impression their crimes had left on me personally.
I went to school with Kristen French when she was abducted. I was a year behind her. Our whole community was devastated when she went missing and even more so when she was found dead. She went missing on her way home from school the day before Good Friday, April 16th, 1992.
Please note, Kristen was the second teenager in St. Catharines to go missing. The first one was Terri Anderson, a 14 year old, went missing in late fall of 1991. She was found in Lake Ontario. Their house was walking distance from the lake. Hmmmm...... coincidence?
So you can imagine everyone's shock when another highschool girl went missing (Kristen), and the two highschools were side by side at the time.
We were very frightened. Our school organized a buddy system so that kids didn't have to walk home alone. I have an unrealistic fear of strangers. I break out in a cold sweat when I get approached by strange men. I carry pepper spray - 2 bottles on me all the time. I've had nightmares about Leslie. I think about the girls not all the time, but a lot. This is something we will never forget. And the thought of her walking around free makes me want to vomit.

Re: Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
No one is saying that Karla got what she deserved -- far from it! She should be in jail for the rest of her natural life like Paul Bernardo. HOWEVER everyone was all too willing to think that she was the battered wife and rush to make the bargain with her. I agree with Marisa -- we should be angry with the crown who made the deal. Once the deal was made it was made and there's little to be done. Should it outrage us and make us sick? YES!

Re: Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
I know that she didn't serve enough time for the crimes that she committed. Is that her fault.... yes. Is it the crowns fault for believing her story as the battered wife... yes. Do I think that she should be left alone to live the rest of her life in peace.... no. Any negative attention that she recieves from people she deserves. I am not thinking that the media attention is a good thing but my goodness, the families of those two girls has to live with the loss for the rest of their lives, I think that Karla deserves to remember the guilt and horrible things that she has done for the rest of her life too. And who is to say if she will re offend. I guess only time will tell. I don't think that she has to fear for her life, but I think that she should not be welcomed into the community with open arms.

Re: Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
Well I'm one of those people who feel she got of lucky and has NOT served her time.
She may have served the sentance handed down to her but since the justice system failed us so be it that the public enforce the rest of her sentance.
I do believe she is justified in fearing for her life and she would definately not go unnoticed in Ontario BUT as my mother use to always say to me...Maybe she should have thought of that BEFORE she decided to assist in the killing of two innocent teenagers (let alone her sister).
I don't think she's remorsefull, I really don't think she cares at all and I do think she is a good actress. We'll see where she takes it from here but given the fact that she had a relationship with someone who is in prison for killing his girlfriend or whatever I don't trust her...at all. IMO, and it's just my opinion, it's only a matter of time before she gets into the same situation all over again.

Re: Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
My opinion - It was canada's failure to prosecute!! They messed up bigtime giving Karla that deal.. It was a failure of Justice and I believe will always be known by that.

Re: Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
It's just one HUGE wrong.
Canada's system is stupid. My GF's son was murdered & he got time served which was under 2 years. At the support group we go to every 3rd Thursday of the month, there are 4 other families with murdered teens or young adults & they all got under 3 years time. Something is wrong here!! It just breaks my heart that robbers spend more time in jail here then murders.

Re: Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
Maybe we should take comfort in the fact that Karla took up with someone who murdered his girlfriend? Since some of us seem out for blood maybe her next relationship will mean we get it!

Re: Karla Wakes up a Free Women.
did you all hear that we aren't the only ones disgusted by the fact that she is free?? Apparently Bernardo is also a little peaved... he is still claiming that she is the one who did the actual killing. They are two sick puppies. She totally wants the media attention for whatever reason. Do we have those sex offender laws where they have to disclose if a convicted offender is moving in the neighbourhood? Cause if we do she shouldn't be alowed to fight it... I guess she shouldn't have pissed so many people of if she didn't want retaliation.
