Default Ostara Recipes

I thought maybe we could share some Ostara recipes. They can be from a site, from a book, or your own personal favourite

Honey Cakes

Little fried cakes, dipped in honey and nutmeg.

INGREDIENTS:

* 1/2 cup Riesling wine
* 1 egg
* 2/3 cup flour
* 1 cup honey
* 2 tbs sugar
* 1/8 tsp cinnamon
* 1/8 tsp nutmeg
* Dash of salt

PREPARATION:
Beat the egg together with the wine. In another mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cinnamon, sugar and salt. Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture. Stir until blended through. Let sit for 30 minutes.

In another small bowl, mix the honey and nutmeg. In a skillet, heat up about a 1/2 inch of oil. Drop a tablespoon of batter into the oil and fry until golden brown. Drain off the oil, and dip into the honey mixture.

Hot Cross Buns

These buns are lightly sweet and will go well with any other Ostara dishes you make.
INGREDIENTS:

* 3 cups flour
* 1 cup evaporated milk
* 3/4 cup sugar
* 1 egg, beaten
* 1 oz of dry yeast
* 1/4 cup melted butter
* 1/4 tsp salt
* 1 tsp cinnamon
* 1/8 tsp allspice

PREPARATION:
Mix all the ingredients except for the yeast and egg. In another bowl, dissolve the yeast in 1/4 cup hot water. Add yeast and beaten egg to the flour mixture. Cover with a cloth and let the dough rise until double in size (about an hour).

Preheat your oven to 400F. Shape the dough into balls around 3-inches across and place in the oven on a lightly greased sheet. After 5 minutes, bring them out and cut a light cross in the tops of each bun. Put back in the oven and bake buns for another 15-20 minutes.

Ostara Stuffed Eggs

Here is an easy way to add some eggs to your Ostara feast
INGREDIENTS:

* 8 hard boiled eggs
* 2 cups mayonnaise
* 1/2 cup vinegar
* 1/8 cup sugar
* fresh thyme or basil

PREPARATION:
Remove the shells from the eggs and slice them lengthwise. Scoop out the yolks and save them in a bowl. Add the mayonnaise, sugar and vinegar. Whip together until nice and smooth. Use a pastry bag or a small spoon to add a big dollop of yolk mixture back onto the egg whites.
Sprinkle with herbs and serve.

These three recipes are from http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/osta...ra_Recipes.htm

Rosemary Potatoes

1 1/2 pounds Small new potatoes
2 Tablespoons Olive oil
1/2 teaspoon Salt
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 Tablespoons Fresh rosemary, chopped

Cover new potatoes with water and bring to a simmer. Cook 5 minutes. Drain and toss potatoes in pan over heat until outside of potatoes are dry. Add olive oil, salt, garlic, and fresh rosemary. Place potatoes in a pan, in one layer, and bake in a 350~ oven until crispy and browned, about 15-20 minutes. Serve with roasted and grilled meats or poultry.

* this isn't my personal recipe (I make mine without measuring!), but it's very close! I like to mix red and white or golden potatoes together for a nice mix. I also add some chopped red onion and a dash of black & ground cayenne pepper for a little more spice

MIXED GREENS WITH RASPBERRY VINAIGRETTE

3 Tablespoons Raspberry vinegar
1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon Garlic, minced
1/3 cup Olive oil
8 cups Mixed baby greens

Combine first 3 ingredients in medium bowl. Gradually whisk in olive oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Place mixed baby greens in large bowl. Toss with enough dressing to coat and serve.

*I personally don't use raspberry (I'm allergic to raspberries, alas!) but you can sub just about any vinagrette to use in this recipe. Be creative

For creative cool and refreshing drinks, I like to mix cranberry or lemonade juices with 7up over ice. I dont make them in bulk so I can vary the recipe, but you certainly can if you're having a larger gathering where mixing one by one could take a lot of time! Ice tea w/lemonade is a great drink over ice also. You can toss in sprigs of mint or slices of lemon or other citrus too.

I love spring!!! Blessed be!

You know ... the only thing that I find on searches is lamb! I'm not a lamb fan and all my recipe books are in storage LOL When I think of cooking in warmer weather, I start to get hungry for something you can grub on without silverware ... like a huge batch of homemade nachos.

I usually use about a 1 1/2 lbs ground beef, tortilla chips, grated cheeses, sliced black olives, sliced tomatoes, corn *off* the cob (canned is usually easiest). I layer it beginning with the chips, then beef, cheese, olives, tomatos, corn on a big cookie sheet lined with foil and toss it in the oven on about 325 til it's crispy and the cheese is melted. Afterwards, get your guacamole, salsas and sour creams as you like and dig in.

Best way to get the cheese in there is to layer some chips, then cheese it, then more chips, then cheese over each layer you put out.

maybe that's not traditional ... but it tastes sooo good LOL (I've axctually been craving it! LOL)
