Icon11 This is WAY outside of my comfort zone. How do yo handle this?

There is a sister in our ward who is dying of cancer. Her mother is taking care of her. Now her mother is sick also (flu she thinks). The RS president is trying to set up a schedule of sisters to be in her home to care for both sisters every day.

This is WAY outside of my comfort zone. I'm having waves of anxiety over this! I'm SO awkward with people. I deal with anxiety over normal every day stuff as it is...............I'm not comfortable in other people's homes. I've never even seen this sister before. I'm not good at making conversation.

I'm freaking out over taking my turn.

How do you handle it when you're asked to go into someone's home and start cleaning and cooking and bathing and well....nursing them?

I did this for my aunt (although I realize it's not the same thing), all I can say is make sure you take the time to pray, and ask *him* to help guide you to help her the best you can.

It ends up being easier than you think it would be. Valerie is right about praying for guidance and then you just roll up your sleeves and do whatever needs to be done. They're probably feeling as awkward about it as you are. One tip: they'll probably be reticent to ask for things because sometimes you just don't want to "put someone out" or impose even more than you already are by having them come over to help...so keep your eyes peeled for opportunities to serve as you are doing the main things you came over to do. I always try to remember how I feel when I'm stuck in bed and not doing so well.

Don't worry! You'll do great...and your next turn will be even easier.

Marianne had great advice! When I was taking care of my mother last year (she died in June) sometimes she didn't want me or the RS women to even do anything, she just wanted company. She also hated putting people out so like Marianne said just see what needs to be done and do it. I'd even say do something they can't see, like the kitchen, or washing etc.

Just remember what a great thing you're doing for someone else. I think that's awesome you're willing to do this for this woman and her mother. I don't know what my mom would have done if her RS hadn't done the same thing for her and us. Some even just came over to read to my mom because she couldn't later on.

Anyway, bless your heart for doing it you'll recieve many rewards for it I know!!

I think the advice already given is very good. I don't know that i'd be comfortable doing that either. Personally, I'd rather take a meal every week or something. I hope you find something that works for you!

How funny that you've posted this. There is a gentlemen in our ward who is ill. Not sure what happened to him, but his wife now takes care of him all the tiem and has asked the RS sisters just to come and caht with him while she gets the cleaning done and wahtnot. I haven't signed up yet, as I have no clue who these people are, but after eradign your post..I just may. Seeing that you are willing to do it, with all your anxiety and such...I have no excuse!! As I am a pretty outgoing person. So...I think next Sunday I'll sign up.

I say pray about it as well. I'm sure you'll do fine. It's that first jump into the pool that's always the hardest.
