Default Quilting question

Does anyone know if I can tie a quilt with ribbon? I am making a baby quilt for the one on the way, but really would like to tie it with ribbon if it will work. Do you know if I can, and if so if there is a special type of ribbon to get?

I think the issue would be fraying and, boy, would it ever be a job to burn the ends of a million little ties! It seems to me that I've seen ribbons used in a similar manner, though. Hmmm. Let me ask my aunt, who is a quilting master!

This is from my aunt:

Yes I have seen baby quilts tied with ribbon, but because it unties so easily you would want to either square not and then make a bow or maybe couble knot the bow like you do to make kids shoes stay tied. Depending on the ribbon it might fray but yarn does too. You could use fray check on the bow ends after it is tied....What I have seen done is they tie the quilt the method where there are no ends.. with crochet thread or something and then just make bows and machine or hand tack it over where the stitch was. Do I make sense???

That made sense, Marianne. I think I'm going to just use embroidery floss because someone told me that the ribbon makes a bigger hole in the material which, after several trips to the washing machine, will make the holes bigger and bigger. I'm such a novice at this, anyway, so I'm probably better-off sticking to the basics!
