Default Packer Cake Story

I was preparing my lesson for the Teaching: No Greater Call class and I read the best object lesson ever...Elder Packer's cake story. I had never heard it before and so I decided that instead of just reading the story I decided to recreate it with a lemon meringue pie. Well, to make a long story short, when I pulled out the pie they all laughed because they had all heard the story...and read the story in the lesson...

So have I been living under a rock? Has everyone in the world heard the effective teaching methods object lesson of serving the cake?

Um, I've never heard of it and really don't even know what "lesson" or object helper you're describing, lol.

It's sounding vaguely familiar, or at least I remember a lesson with cake in it, getting ruined somehow or something. Maybe that's a totally different story, though. Refresh my memory ... :-)

The story is this: Bro. Packer goes before a group of young missionaries with a beautiful cake. He asks if anyone wants a peice and, of course, an eager elder steps forward. Bro. Packer sticks his hand in the cake, grabs a handful, and throws it at the elder (who is suitably shocked). Then he asks if there are any other takers and no one steps forward. Then they pull out a lovely china plate, a fork, etc. and cut a beautiful peice that is then served on the lovely plate. The idea is that it is the EXACT same yummy cake but that how you serve it makes all the difference in how appetizing it is.

Isn't that such a great object lesson? It really drove the point home for me. BTW, I wasn't going to throw the pie at anyone. I was just going to grab a piece and squeeze it onto a plate (and lick off whatever dripped down the side).

Thank you! Now I feel less like a total dork because I hadn't heard of it before (all of my sisters said, "You haven't heard that before? It's one of those wonderful but massively overused object lessons!")

I don't think I've ever seen it done, either. Sounds like it would have been cool to me!

I've definitely never seen it done but then again I've been in YW or Primary for the last couple years so maybe I missed it, lol. Sounds like a good one though and I love object lessons!
