Default Black History Month

Do you think Black History Month is slowing slipping away?

I think there is more to know about black history than one could learn in a month. Why is it only a month anyway?

Does anyone know what they are teaching kids in school during this month? And what do they teach after Black History Month?

It does seem to be slipping away. I was looking forward to watching something on Cable or whathaveyou. I can't find anything. My girls haven't said anything about Black History Month. I'll ask them when I go home in the morning.

I know at my sons' school they color the same picture of MLK JR every year in Febbie, and they discuss his "life". It is very brief. But that is about it. Same thing every year.

My son, Aaron, is "Lil Mr Activist" and last year asked his teacher directly in fornt of the class why the couldn't learn about anyone else and proceeded to name of several prominent AA men and women in history. (Teacher wrote me a note..though I won't get into her answer, may start a debate).

Aaron is all into his heritage and is always wanting to check out books at the library or read my collection of books I have, he has a million questions, we get the NAACP's Crisis magazine because he is so interested and he now wants a Junior membership to the NAACP for his bday. If you have a civil rights/black history question...ask Aaron. LOL!!

I think BHM is slipping away, and why it is only a month...I have no idea, its aggravating. There is such a rich and wonderful history and it really is a shame that they aren't teaching children our WHOLE history..there is so much more than the text books give.

as a black second grade teacher, i teach black history and famous black americans. the other teachers briefly discussed it for maybe a week. but it is sad that some kids could not tell me one thing about martin luther king. also, the school where i teach, which is predominately black, did not have a black history program and we have a black principal. go figure!!!!!! i get in a wild rage when i think about it.

WOW.... how sad is that? I hope his (MLK) legacy does not die. Our history is so rich and its too bad that its not a mandatory subject all year. I know in college, black experience is a mandatory subject for graduation.

I always enjoyed the classes because I learned so much.
