Default Lent and Breast Feeding

I heard a rumor that when someone is Breast feeding they don't have to do the fasting of Lent. What do you ladies know of that? I've still given up sweets- which is probably a good thing but I was just curious as to your take on this.

TIA!

When I went through RCIA (finished at Easter Vigil 2003) we were told that pregnant women and young children are exempt from all fasting except for the giving up of meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. I don't remember anything about nursing moms, though, I'm sorry.

I have always been told that age(young or aged), medical reasons and circumstances are definately taken into consideration and I would nursing Moms fit into that category as we need to eat properly to keep our milk supply right. I have also been told by our priest this year that fasting means to cut back not necessarily go without whereas abstain means go without and that is meat on Ash Wednesday, Fridays, especially good Friday Don't know if that helps sorry

Thanks ladies... I've still given up sweets (they can't be good for the baby or for me for that matter) and have abstained from meat on Fridays (except for today... totally forgot it's Friday! ).

I had always heard that too-- and that is what I am doing also. I think the rule is that young children, elderly, or anyone with a medical condition (pregnant, nursing, diabetic, etc.) doesn't have to fast. (One meal a day on Ash Wed. & Good Friday) But that doesn't neccessarily mean you don't have to abstain. (No meat on Fridays) It makes sense, that if another person is totally dependent on you for their nutrition, you don't want to shortchange them! We had this question come up recently with some friends and that was the general concensus!
