Default Lent

Has anyone decided what you're going to do? I can't believe that Ash Wednesday is a week from tomorrow!

I'm trying to lose weight this year so I thought giving up junk food would be a good thing to do for Lent. I'm also trying to get to church more often so going to Church every Sunday is also another promise I'm making.

I'm trying to get into the rhythm of the Church for Rose's sake so this year we're going to do the Shrove Tuesday thing and eat pancakes for supper and then we're going to go Church on Ash Wednesday. I'm also going to go meatless on Fridays...All part of my return to my faith.

I'm not sure yet. I always try to do something, but usually fail miserably. I think this year, instead of giving up something, I might try to DO something, like go to mass once during the week, or say the rosary once a week, etc.

My assistant and I are giving up chocolate. She keeps a stack in her desk. I have always given up meat on Ash Wednesday and on Fridays during Lent. Since I teach at a Catholic School, giving up meat shouldn't be hard on Fridays since they don't serve it during Lent. I am also going to try to be more healthy with my eating.

The kids and I are giving up TV in our home.

My personal one though is that I am trying to say the Rosary daily. I got a CD of the Pope saying it, so I've been listening to that in the car and also doing it while I am nursing Sarah. So far, so good.

My DH gave up alcohol and cigars. He's doing great too-- I think that one sounds harder!

We also always do the meatless fridays and fasting thing too.

p.s.-- my DH is on the school board for our Church's Catholic School and he just came home from tonight's meeting and told me that the school cafeteria served Hot Dogs for lunch on Ash Wednesday!! How crazy is that!

Did the person who does that forget no meat on Ash Wednesday?

For me, it's no breads. I usually do Cokes, but I thought breads would be better to help me lose weight.

I usually try to DO something rather than give up something. This year we're trying to be better about saying an extra prayer at dinner for someone who needs help (at the family table).
