Does anyone know why the NIV varies so much from the others in this passage, Hebrews 11:11. Below are 10 translations of that passage and all the others mention Sarah but the NIV is the side of Abrahami, Sara is mentioned in the footnote.

I cant read hebrew, greek or latin. Just find it strange.

That's all any bible in English is, someone's translation. That's why old translations (like king james) use thy and what not... that was the common way of speaking at that time.

Translated word to word from greek to english, it says:


To faith also very Sarah power into throwing down of seed she received and beside appointed time of age (limit), since faithful she esteemed the (one) having promised;

So putting it into modern english speech:

By faith also Sarah herself recieved power to conceive seed, even when she was past the age limit, since she esteemed him faithful who had promised.


My guess is the translator(s) of that version just got creative or mistranslated it. Or used another codex in his/her translations.

the difficulty with translations is that they are just that - translations of an original thought in a very different language with different nuances and cultural references. that's what makes sermon prep such a challenge for my dh every week!

Thanks for the info. I knew it was a difficulty of getting the right meaning etc of what was being said at the time and generally the differences are smallish but this is actually taking Sarah out of the faith Chapter and therefore actually highlights why its very important when studying to use more than 1 bible.
