Icon5 Eek! Hospitality help?

Upon reviewing this verse -
"Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by doing so, some people have entertained angels without knowing it" (Hebrews 13:2)
It has occured to me that I am not at all hospitable! I generally have no problems chatting with people while I am out and about but if someone comes to my house I tend to freak out. (Unless it has been planned, I tend to micro-organize everything!) I have been getting a lot of surprise visits lately, too! What do you do for surprise guests? What do you feed them? Should I just pretend there arent a zillion toys strung all over or do a quick pick up with them there? Any tips for making this easier on myself? Thanks in advance!

Personally it would depend on who it was, we have been given common sense and are not expected to put ourselves in danger. If its a situation where you feel safe then a cup of tea and something quick and convenient. As for toys around the place etc then it wouldnt bother me that much to let them see it.

God bless,

Matthew

I agree with Matthew.

What about the story of Jesus, Mary and Mary. The toys, any mess (not saying you have any(insert blushing smily here)), wouldnt be a problem.
I often what I should do in this situation, if the person need a place to stay the night I would call a cab, and pay for that and a night at a motel and order some dinner to be delivered. That was the person is being looked after and not putting the family in danger. And maybe call the paster to go and see the person with/ with out me.

God Bless

One thing is never be alone with folk you dont know, and after dark with a man/woman (depending on your own gender). Again its just being sensible. Some people may say this is over the top (especially the latter part) but we are not to cause others to stumble and being alone with the opposite sex (especially after dark) can cause problems.

God bless,

Matthew

being a pastor's wife, i am often in this situation, sometimes entertaining people really last minute. and with a toddler in the house who owns toys that seem to multiply at night, yeah, it's hard to keep the place straight!

one thing i was able to do in terms of keeping the house neat - i try to clean up the kitchen counters every night. it makes a huge difference. also, i keep Josh's toys put back on shelves or in the den at the end of the day(it's the room off of our bedroom that visitors don't go into). if someone was to come during the day and surprise me with toys in the front room, i would just ignore the toys - it's obvious to anyone that we've got a toddler, they should expect to see toys out when Josh is awake.

in terms of being able to be a good host/ess and be hospitable... no one expects Martha Stewart! and if they do, they themselves need serious help i usually have a box of cookies (or lately, a container of homemade cookies) and we always have coffee and tea in the house.

i have never really had to worrk much about being alone with someone - because it's usually dh doing the last minute inviting, so he's usually there. and if i felt uncomfortable for any reason when he wasn't there, the church is exactly 7 minutes (driving) from home, so he could easily come home quickly.

we are careful about who stays overnight at our house - not just for our safety, but because we have a child. usually it's family, and this year we will probably have a missionary staying for a few days during our church missions conference.
