Icon13 prolly

Are there really people out there who think "prolly" is a real word? This irritates me to no end every time I see it! Don't they know the real word is "probably"?!?!?!

Rant over, just had to get that out there.

Yeah I hate that too....sounds too much like baby talk to me. I also hate people using the shortcuts like r for are and u for you. It makes it difficult to read in my book, not easier.

That and net speak tends to drive me bonkers. Is it really that much harder to type you then u? 2 for two or to or even too...cum versus come really drives me crazy as it means completely different things. I don't see it much here but some of the other boards I frequent it is rampant and drives me nuts.

I must thank you for venting "prolly". I am new to these boards and hadn't seen that yet and would have had no idea what that word would have been.

I just assume that people who use it are too lazy to type the whole word, too much in a hurry or are nak'ing(nursing at keyboard). I personally will not ever use it, but to me it is not much different than Y'all(which I say irl).

Alot of the kids I went to school used that word. That and axe instead of ask. Also, domebe (which I took for don't be). People are sometimes lazy- some are just ignorant.

Thanks though, I haven't seen prolly since 11th grade english class. It was written in the sentence (let's see if I can remember it all since that was 1992) "I no he was prolly tawkin' to her bout dat.".

Ladies, you speak to this little copy editor's heart. I work for a mostly well-educated staff, and I have come across "prolly" more than once. I won't even go into how often poor spelling habits turn into a debate between the editor and me.

P.S. Please, please, please don't hold my profession or my posts against me. I don't always edit what I type, mostly because there's usually a toddler trying to climb into my lap as I do so!

I dont use prolly but I do use Probly. Well, you know what I mean when you read it. I know the correct spelling of the word, I dont know why I dont use it though. I need to think about this.

I'm a super big spelling geek but I have to admit I use it when I'm posting or sending an email to someone close to me. It's just slang, people!

It's just like gonna, hafta or wanna. Do those bother you too?

Prolly.

Not to mention you are robbing your child of their privacy and not teaching them a thing about protecting who they are. And THAT is bad parenting.

And finally, it's a message board, it's supposed to be fun! When it stops being fun, leave. There are some people here and I can't imagine why they stay (EM). I don't know how this is fun to you. And maybe some of you can't stay away but I can. And will. Thankfully, I have a life in real life. This is fun, not validation.

I don't mind slang ( I use "kinda" quite a bit), it's more when people really don't know that it is not a real word. I am amazed at how many people on the interenet aren't able to use to, two and too or their, there and they're correctly. There also seems to a rampant use of alot. Alot is not a word, it should be a lot. That one bugs me A LOT ( ) for some reason.

Prolly is a local thing... I use it all the time! Don't plan on stoppin either.... lol
Actually when you got to one hand type it's much easier to use slang and shorter words.
So I will prolly end this as this, because me usin the word prolly alot is gonna annoy some people, so I prolly should leave it alone. I jus yankin yer chains...

Man... I didn't realize that was such a big deal. I mean I'm an editor by day and I use it. Although, I tend to use it and other stuff like that is that I'm trying to fit in debating in between projects. Besides, it's not like you guys don't know what we're talking about. I do understand though, there are other words that when spelled wrong I think the person is just dumb.
