Icon9 Car seat trouble?!

Ok. So left my daughter with her grandparents last night. Which is ok and they take good care of her when she's there. They have a daughter that is ten years older than Aleigha(my dd). (this is there 2nd marriage) Anyway, Im still at work and I forgot to leave a car seat with them, you kno the 'just in case' things you do. SO I call to check up and see how everything was and grandma began to tell me how good she was eating at the golden corral, and as she kept on talking, in the back of my mind I kept saying "she doesnt have a car seat" So I asked and she told me that she strapped Aleigha in the back seat in the middle, by the way my daughter is almost two, she's 22 months.

I didnt know what to say and I had to get off the phone. The last thing she said was pray that we make it home alright.

How do I tell her that I disagree with taking my dd out in a car without a car seat, I just want everything to be alright

Grief stricken momma

I can understand how you would feel. I would just explain the "LAW" and how important it is to have her safe in her car seat. If you are in an accident and the child is hurt they will press charges if they were not buckled up. If you leave her there again I would put the car seat in their car before you left. I'm pretty picky about how the car seat is installed so I perfer to do it myself. She did get home ok right?

Oh man, I would have FLIPPED OUT!!! My dd, who is 8 years old is still BY LAW supposed to be in a booster seat(Pennsylvania law says 8 AND 80 lbs). My daughter is not even CLOSE to 80 lbs, so she must still use the booster.

Anyway, everyone in my family knows that they go NOWHERE without the kids booster seats(my 4 year old uses one as well). If they ever attempt to and I find out about it....they won't be taking my kids by car ANYWHERE for a long time.

You need to put your foot down and tell them that they are putting their grandchild at SERIOUS risk!! If they cannot follow the LAW, then they cannot take their grandchild anywhere unless YOU are with them at all times!

Oh, they would so hear something from me and it would be a while before they watched her again. I'm assuming since she was in the middle, it was lap belt only. Here's a nice clip you can show them of what a lap belt only crash looks like, and that's IF she actually doesn't fly out of the seatbelt (not trying to scare you, but since she's home safe I figured it was o.k. to share). http://depts.washington.edu/booster/...54_6yr_lap.mpg Here's what she would've looked like in a ffing convertible and then better yet a rfing convertible (how my 22mos old still rides). http://www.oeamtc.at/netautor/html_s...cosipriori.mpg and http://www.britax.fi/quicktime/TWside240.AVI Here's a site that goes over all the carseat laws in each state as well. http://www.inventiveparent.com/state-laws.htm

I would be 100% firm with them that that is unacceptable. I have told my parents that before too, that if they EVER take Jevin anywhere without a carseat, their babysitting days are done. LOL I say it jokingly like I'm psycho mom but they know deep down its true. LOL They even have their own carseat for him so that the "need" to go somewhere without one never arises.

Wow, I would have been upset too. Did you let them know that they cannot do that ever again? How did it go?

When Sage was tiny she had difficulties with the carseat for awhile and when i talked about it at a family dinner my grandmother, straight faced, said "why don't you just take her out and hold her?" we told her about the laws now because when i was little and when my mom was little there wasn't carseat laws. she honestly didn't know.
