Kerry team slams reports VP Cheney had a flu shot

Senator John Kerry's presidential campaign Wednesday slammed Vice President Dick Cheney, a heart patient, over reports he had a flu shot, despite a shortage of the vaccine.

The campaign complained that Treasury Secretary John Snow and Senate Majority leader Bill Frist also had jabs, despite Bush's advice that the young and healthy did not need to get an injection.

"Once again, the Bush administration proves that it is the 'do as we say, not as we do' White House," the campaign said in a statement issued in Pittsburgh where Kerry was campaigning.

"The very week that (health) secretary (Tommy) Thompson is telling Americans to keep calm, Dick Cheney, John Snow and Bill Frist are getting flu shots."

"It is unfortunate that the Bush administration failed to do the work necessary to ensure that all Americans, including those most at risk, had been able to get shots as well."

Cheney would fit into the government's definition of those most vulnerable to a looming influenza epidemic as he has a long history of heart disease.

Bush last week suggested in the final presidential debate that the young and healthy forgo the annual shot amid a shortage of vaccine that Kerry has blamed on the president's management of the health system.

I REST MY CASE...Clinton got a flu shot, too. Will there be uproar? Probably not.

I think it's messed up in BOTH cases. My dad was denied a flu shot, and he has MAJOR MAJOR heart problems. He was told that having a heart attack and bypass surgery DOES NOT make you a high risk patient. I Think the whole situation is messed up personally!

Actually the entire Congress (Senate and House) were offered flu shots this week. So.. .Kerry and Edwards had the ability to get one also.

Hmmmm sounds odd a heart patient would not be told they are high risk. My FIL is one and Flu would proabably kill him... he is considered high risk and is able to get one... odd...

UMMM I am not sure but I do not think that if the shot is actually available that they can DENY him one. They may have suggested he not get one but they cannot outright deny it to him can they? And if they did then he always can find another doctor who will give it to him. I say he needs to take this up with his doctor.

If people can not get the flu shot they should get the pneumonia (sp?) shot. There is plenty of that.

Well, no one in my family gets flu shots, so there's more shots available from us.

oh.. and don't forget Cheny also qualifies due to his age!!!

Hillary got a flu shot, too, but "claims" that it was before they knew of a shortage. I didn't think they GAVE the flu shots THAT early.

Maybe your father needs to be a patient of the Cleveland Clinic like my father. He is getting his flu and pneumonia (sp?) shots because he has 30% heart function. They told him he must get his flu shot EVERY year. That or he needs to see my SIL to be's doc. She has severe asthma (been hosp for it recently) and her doc said she HAS to have one.

My DH (as of tomorrow) will get one because he might have COPD. My uncle is getting one due to his heart. My cousin is gettign one because he has high security clearances and works intell and they are making sure those people don't get sick.

He needs to talk to another doc or go to Canada. THey'll give him a shot.
