I did for a couple of weeks when I first started posting here, but not for several months. I didn't find anything informational.

This same idea went through my head. I'm curious, but not curious enough to get myself all worked up.

Okay, so your post forced me to go over and check the board out. The only thing that is running through my mind is "No wonder Bush got re-elected!" And the worst part was I saw posts from someone I like very much from the TTC board!
Here is something that was posted over there:
The question was what is a Republican?
Here is the answer:
Quote:
I've been thinking about this.

I think overall they are for less government intrusion into our lives.

Some are more fiscally conservative, some are more socially conservative. Some are conservative all the way around (which is where I fall).

I think, ideally, a Republican believes in strict interpretation of the Constitution, not the "living, breathing" document thing.

I think they are about less taxes because they know that lower tax rates actually benefits the government more...people have more incentive to push forward when they keep more of their money.

I think they want freedom, not just for us but for everyone. I think they truly want to help those around the world that are being oppressed - not just paying lip service, but taking the action to get the job done.
So, is this what a Republican is??? Comments, thoughts???

#1 that she had to think about it. It should be on the tip of her tongue. She refers to them as "they are" is she not one?!
After reading I think she did hit the correct side of those issues.

I don't like to talk about other boards, but I have mentioned a copule of times before where one of my biggest 'gripes' about this adminisration is that they're NOT fiscally conservative. I could always see conservatives point of view on that, but Dubya and friends are spending money and giving tax cuts like we're still living with a surplus, not like there's a defeceit AND we're in the middle of a war. I just don't know how any Republican can think that this administration is fiscally conservative.

I am also baffled by the fiscally conservative thing. I have a very good friend who is a Republican. He is not at all socially conservative (thank goodness), but he claims to be fiscally conservative, which I am fine with. During the election he admitted many times that this administration is far from fiscally conservative. He also concedes that Bush is an idiot. But he still voted for him! He pretty much hates every policy that came out of this administration, but still voted for Bush. I guess old habits die hard. He could never really give me a reason for his vote, either.

Oh, I also don't think this administration is for less intrusion into people's lives. To me that means live and let live. If you don't like what someone else is doing, then don't do it. I think this administration wants to make everyone live their lives the way they see fit. I find that to be very intrusive.

Ok true. I was looking at that definition as a whole from the repub. side, not just this administration. They are very intrusion into people's lives look at the Patriot Act

You are right. This administration is really un-Republican in many ways. It is almost as if the Bush regime has hijacked the Republican party and transformed it into something that it was never intended to be. It is my understanding that the Repub. party was always about being fiscally conservative and smaller government. This admin. is so far from that!!

This was the first thing that came to mind at that comment.

They aren't fiscally conservative, they are willing to spend money that we don't have.

Unless you are a woman. Freedom is giving others the right to make a choice that you may not agree with.

My tax refund has actually gone DOWN since this administration and their cuts. Cost of living has risen, income has maintained. Gas prices have risen . . . then we go into the entire issue of environment . . . . . . I think Republicans BELIEVE they are all these things, but I do NOT think that this Administration is ANY of these things. Unfortunately there are a lot of Republicans out there (and, lets be honest, Democrats too) that vote for the party regardless of what the person running ACTUALLY REPRESENTS.

I will admit it---I am the quintessential Yellow Dog Democrat!

Lou- ours went down as well! I guess we're just not rich enough to enjoy the tax cuts . I have voted Republican for some senate/congressional seats, but have voted Dem for the Presidency.

I consider myself Democrat, but there are republicans that I have voted for because I liked them. Not a lot mind you, but there are some.

Sorry I've been gone awhile- had to work 6 12's in a row so all I want to do when I get home is kiss my baby and go to sleep!

Yeah, I'm very concerned about the "dark side" (wink) What makes them tick? Why do they look at our country and say, "yep... all those school shootings (ect- insert problem here) are because the liberals are out to take away Christian's rights." I also believe in the old adage "know thine enemy."

I recently saw a posting there about how the dastardly hypocritical demos have blocked the appointment of judges!!! I desperately wanted to post that when Clinton was in office Republicans blocked 64 of his choices. Clinton, who actually believed in uniting, not dividing- sent them mainly Moderates. The fuss the Republicans are raising now is that Demos have blocked 7 of Bush's choices. I was good though and didn't post objections there, I posted something along the lines of "I wish we could debate each other on these boards, and don't you ever go check out what us Dems are saying" One of them posted back (quite correctly and politely) that that was what the debates boards are for and no, she didn't ever look at our board. The next reply kind of took me aback. It was from one of their hosts and it was very cold along the lines of " I don't care what the Democrats have to say" and it was of "no importance" to her. YIKES! I hope I am never so sure of myself that I can totally reject what other people have to say. I wondered if that was strictly a conservative way of looking at things, or was I weird in wanting to know about what the rightwingers have to say. I tend to think conservatives see everything black/white (good/evil right/wrong) and liberals trip all over ourselves because we see grey.

I totally agree.

I would never do that b/c the Republican party is too *tightly* controlled. They vote the way the President tells them too or else. There aren't any moderate (let alone liberal) Republicans because they all toe the party line, which states "thou shalt not piss off our base, the religious right."

Woohoo! I think I figured out the quote funtion

I completely agree with this. I think that's why we're not as 'united' as the Repubs because we look at all the 'what ifs' . I think a lot of us are programmed to question things and take everything into perspective. I think Dems in general ask themselves "How will this (insert issue/agenda here) affect other people, the world, the future, etc.?" I've always thought that the Repubs were a 'here and now, what's in it for me' kind of group and that's very easy for a lot of people to get behind and support.

My congressman, Jim Ramstad, is a moderate republican and is not like this at all. I really respect him for not always toeing the line, and I will probably continue to vote for him. He is a big proponent of Mental Health Parity legislation, which is one of my pet issues, and he has spoken out against unfunded mandates like No Child Left Behind. He's not perfect, but I'd rather keep a moderate republican in office than face the alternative of letting an ultra-right wing Rep get on the ticket.

Of course I'd also love to see a great Dem. challenge him, but we seem to have a shortage of them these days.
