Default Hill Compromises: Good Omen?

I have to admit that I haven't been following the filibuster developments very closely, but I am interested in the debate about SS. Over the past few days I've been seeing a lot of articles/mentions of compromise on the Hill. People are starting to say that the Bush adminsitration is taking a more bi-partisan approach to the judicial nominee debate. Do you think this could trickle over into SS? I'm hoping that we can have a more bi-partisan debate.

I hope so, though I've heard/seen several sources say that Dems want private accounts completely off the table first. I don't know if that's still the case or not.

I don't think private accounts will ever happen. The public is largely against them and the Republicans know it. Bush doesn't have to worry about the political fallout from trying to institute private accounts as he doesn't have to run again, but Senate Republicans do have to run again and private accounts will not play well with their constituents. I think it would be the equivalent of political suicide if they supported them. In my opinion, the easiest and most obvious fix is to take away the income ceiling. All money earned should have social security taxes taken out. Currently I think you top out at $90,000 or somewhere near that. Any money earned after that amount has no social security taxes taken out.

that's true. The cap is at $90K right now. And I don't think it would be that much of a burden to raise it a bit. Even a slight raise would significantly help SS.
