Re: Complaint...
Well, I am not agnostic, but I do get tired of people on another board I visit claiming that all Christians are wonderful loving people . . . being a good person has little to nothing to do with being Christian. There are many wonderful people out there that are agnostic, or muslic, or buddhist, or mormon, or catholic or whatever! I think we need to get by the stereotype of religion just as much as we need to get by the stereotypes of ethnicity and such . . .

Re: Complaint...
I am really just sick of the religious right period.
This may sound odd coming from a practicing Catholic, but I see it as my duty to keep my politics and my faith separate. The religious right doesn't get that not having a state-sponsored religion is actually beneficial to them. It protects their right to practice their faith as they see fit. I may not agree with certain things on a personal level, but I do not think that I have the right to force those views on people who do not share my faith. I am proud that we live in a country where (supposedly) you can be any religion you want or none at all and it is perfectly fine. I am disgusted with people on the religious right who want to pass legisaltion that mirrors their faith. The part about it that makes me the angriest is that they pick and choose what they like from the Bible and discard the rest. They are all hung up on gay marriage because it is easy. It doesn't affect them on a personal level, so they cling to that for dear life. These same hypocrites also typically think that sex before marriage is also a sin, but they do not try to pass legislation regarding this and most of them DID have sex before marriage, knowing full well that they were sinning (according to their religion).
I find that most of the religious right are the exact opposite of the loving, wonderful people that they make themselves out to be. And they make all Christians look bad!

Re: Complaint...
Thats guys! My Parents are good Catholic people. My Dad now has Alzheimers and my Mom has not been diagnosed with it, but we are pretty sure she has it too. My Dad is much farther along with the Disease. Well anyway, my Dad drove for Meals on Wheels, they worked in a soup kitchen run by the Catholic church, took communion to shut ins etc, etc. Never once have they said anything bad about anybody. This is what I wish Christians would be. But instead we have Christians on the right that want to shove their beliefs down our throats because we don't believe what they do.
Pretty sad huh?
I think this is one of the reasons that has turned me away from religion (besides too many unanswered questions about the validity of the Bible and whether good really exists). By the way I was baptized and raised Catholic and my husband (he was an unpracticing Southern Baptist....ha...yeah his family drinks and didn't go to church)and I got married in the Catholic Church.
Thanks for listening. Its just something that his bugging me.
One more thing, did you here our Lovely Governor Owens veteod the Emergency Contraceptive bill a couple of weeks ago? They tried to override the veteo but fell short by 7 or 8 votes.
His reason? It wouldn't be fair to the Catholic run hospitals? That this would go against their beliefs? WTF?! Don't they get state funding? By the way Owens is Catholic and is cahoots with the Archbishop. This makes me wanna puke.
GRRRRR

Re: Complaint...
I know what you mean. I'm agnostic-- I really, really want to believe there is a god, and sometimes I think that there must be. I got a negative view on organized religion from a young age (long story) and have just not found a religion that screams 'this is for you!' to me. Anyway, even though I am agnostic, I would fight and even go to war for everyone's right to practice their religion freely in their chuch and personal lives. However, it seems that these same people I would fight for don't give a crap about my beliefs and want to make sure their specific interpretaion of god's word is pushed on everyone. So, yeah, I guess I'm bitter.
BTW: Does anyone notice that a lot of these people(I'm not saying all) who are anti-abortion are also pro-war, pro death penalty, and support legislation that puts people more at risk of making the choice to abort? Strange, huh? I'm pro choice, but I would like tosee programs put in place that would make the abortion rate go down drastically so no one has to make that decision.

You know, it really depends on the neighborhood as to what and how the non-Mormon population is treated. I grew up in a small town here in Utah, and was raised by an inactive Mormon, and an inactive Catholic. My dad (the Mormon) said that I had to be baptized otherwise I wouldnt have friends. My mom finally agreed, and when I was 8 (the normal age for baptism in the Mormon Church), they had me baptized.
Because I rarely went to Church - neither of my parents would and how many 8 year olds do you know that would go on their own ), the neighborhood did not change their attitude towards me. There were kids that were not allowed to play with me because my parents were not practicing Mormons. By the time I met my husband (18 yrs old), I hated the Church. However, his parents were wonderful and made me realize that the Church wasn't the problem, it was the people. Unfortunately, there seem to be a lot of people in this Church that behave 'holier-than-thou' to people of other religions. That irritates me.
I would actually call myself a liberal, semi-active Mormon now. I stay involved with the youth in the area and go to Church sporadically, as does my husband. We do not want to continue to live in Utah much longer, however. I want my daughter to grow up where there is diversity - religious as well as ethnic - and Utah is NOT the place to find either one of those. I am 95% certain that if we continued to live where we are, Tori would experience what I did as a child to some degree . . . which is wrong.
So, I don't know that I completely answered your question. It can be difficult if you are not in the right neighborhood with the right people, but those attitudes can change over time, so you just never know. How's that for a non-answer.

The judgmental attitudes of many of the religious right makes them exactly the opposite of what a Christian should be. If all the people that claimed to be a good Christian actually was, we would live in a much better world.
