Default I'm learning to crochet!

And it's so much fun! So far I'm just making a blanket w/ a single crochet, but when it's done I'm going to have my friend show me how to do something "fancier" around the edges... It's a blanket for my "bun in the oven", and i won't add the border until I know what color to add!

When I have more done, I'll post pics. I'm only done about 7 rows right now, and it just looks like a really cool belt! LOL

I knit but I haven't figured out crochet but I want to. I seem to be having problems with the proper tension.
I would love to see pics of your blankie too!

Talking about tension, I think I finally got it right. Whenever I crochet it gets so tight, and when I first started everything became circular. For Christmas I decided to crochet my sister a blanket with rainbows on it. I made the pattern and did it in a month. By the time I finished the last row was a couple inches wider the first row. LOL

I just taught myself to crochet too. I bought the I taught myself to crochet kit at Walmart and a skein of yarn and went to town. My goal was a blanket for Sarah and so far I am about 1/5 the way done. It seems to take me so long to do this but then I only get about 4 - 5 rows max done in one night as I do it to relax me before bed. It puts me to sleep to be honest. lol...I am so glad to hear that I am not the only one having troubles with the tension. Sometimes I get it so tight it's like digging through it to make it. And the first thing I did make was supposed to be a washcloth and it ended up looking like a cute little curly toy for the cats. At this rate it won't be big enough for Sarah for long though. But at least it's a start and we can use it as a lap afghan after she outgrows it. And also will it soften up after it's finished and washed? The yarn I bought was the beginners stuff and isn't really soft right now.

I love crocheting. I like the double stitch. I make a baby afghan for alot of people who are preg. I can only do a ripple afghan for some reason but I can make lots of other things. I taught my dislexic friend how to crochet the ripple afghan a few years ago. She was taught to crochet left handed. OMG it was a chore lol. But she loved the afghan so much I had to help her learn it. Since then she has been making them all the time.

I have it in my own line store for sale. But I cant figure out how to upload a picture here so I dont know how to show it to you.

Here's an easy edging.

When you are all done with the body, use a slip stitch to connect to the outside edge. Chain 3. Now do 3 double crochet in each stitch around. When you get back to the first stitch, join them together. Then do a chain 3 and do one double crochet in each stitch around. continue this as many rows as you like. It will give you a nice little ruffle.

As to the crocheting getting wider as you go along - that comes from getting confused about where the last/first stitch is at the ends of the rows. Until you are more experienced, a good way to solve that problem is to put a bobby pin, or a safety pin, in the first stitch of the row right after you make it. When you do that - it makes it easier to know which is the stitch, and which is just the turning chain.

Good luck!
