Hi everyone, I was looking for advice from chihuahua owners who had their dogs teeth cleaned. My is 2lbs 2oz and he is in need of a teeth cleaning. Unfortunately that means that he will have to have anethesia for the procedure. Any tips as to what we should look out for? I am really concerned for his health during this procedure.

Hi! Lurking....
I had a chihuahua (she passed away a year and a half ago at 18). I remember my mother took her for teeth cleaning maybe two or three times. As long as the chihuahua is young and in good health she should be fine. Remember that chihuahua's are very nervous pets so it is important to know if their heart is in good condition (this shouldn't be the case if the dog is young). Your vet should be able tp provide you with more help. Hope it goes well.

I would recommend a blood panel to check your pets liver and kidneys. These are what filter the anesthesia and you want to make sure they are in good working order. Also I would recommend getting IV fluids during the procedure. This helps give them their daily allotment of fluids as well as gives the DR an open line just in case it were needed (god forbid). Another thing is ECG monitoring. Some places it is the norm that it is used, but if it isn't I would suggest that. Good luck and KUP on how it goes!

Thanks for all the advice. He had his dental appointment yesterday and died this morning. They monitored him and everything and he came home last night and this morning wasn't doing well and he died at home. I should have gone with my instincts. Oh well. Thanks again!!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a 1 yr old chihuahua. I am surprised that the vet wanted to do a cleaning @ such a young age I have 6 yr old labmix & he is just now needing a cleaning. I hope you will be able to get another dog but I would consider changing vets. As an afterthought did you feed soft food or hard. Again so sorry for your loss.
