Default IUI'S Questions???

Hello everyone!!! Here is and update on me and my beautiful partner of 19 mths. We schedule an appointment for yearly check up and had blood work etc. Well to make a long story short....we are now starting the ovulation kit for 7 days and taken prenatal vitamins. Now the questions I have for you guys are....

How many IUI have to take place in order to conceive?
Was you prescribe prenatal before conceiving?
If the IUI don't work after 3 tries then what will be the next thing to do?

Default Re: IUI'S Questions???

For your first question, you may want to go to the parenting board. You may get more "successes" there.

We did 6 IUIs all negative. My RE recommends only 3 (with injectables) before moving on, but the insurance covered it so we did 6.

YES! I've been prenatal vitamins for almost 2 1/2 years prescribed by my doctor. He said the prescription strength are way better than any you can buy OTC.

If you aren't doing injectables with IUI, I would recommend adding injectables to the IUIs after 3 tries. The RE would watch your follicles closely and "trigger" you ovulation to time the IUI perfectly. If those are unsuccessful, the next step would be IVF.

Good luck!

Hi there. First off, the answers to your questions depend on a lot of different factors, including your doc.

For me, it took 2 IUI to conceive the first time (ended in ruptured ectopic), 1 IUI to conceive the second time (ended in late miscarriage), and 4 IUI to conceive the third time (still pregnant at 21 weeks). I was doing Clomid with a trigger shot for all of those.

I was taking over the counter prenatals the entire time.

The last questions depends a lot on what you want and what your doc recomends. I agree with Carrie that it's a good idea to try injectables if your not using them before that point.

Good luck and I hope you and your DP are able to conceive quickly.

Joanna

For lesbians coming to my RE he usually does the following:
3 natural cycles
3 clomid cyles
3 injectable cycles
IVF

Success with IUI depens on fresh or frozen sperm. Fresh sperm has a much higher success rate. The average with frozen is 6 months.

Good luck.

Hi JJ -

I am almost at the end of cycle #2.. and so far both of my cycles have been natural IUI's ... if #2 doesn't work, then I will do an HSG. (A dye test of your uterus and fallopian tubes to make sure everything is working correctly). From there I am not sure where I go. I have been taking prenatal's for almost 3 month now. I have no idea what your RE would recommend, I would guess natural, then drugs then IVF... but that is just a guess from what I have been reading on the boards.

GOOD LUCK!

Ok, I have another question....what is clomid? The doctor told me to take prenatal vitiams b/c I was taken flint stone chewables (I know), She wanted me to get more floic acid. We are shooting for August to do the IUI.

And to Joanna....have you conceived off of IUI?

Clomid is an oral pill taken days 5-9 of your cycle (or 3-7, 4-8 depending on your doctor). Basically, the idea behind Clomid is to "jump start" the follicles you are producing for a cycle. Clomid essentially tricks the body into believing that it has lowered levels of estrogen. As a result, the brain begins to secrete increased levels of GnRH, which, in turn, stimulates the release of FSH and LH. These hormones then trigger the ovaries to begin to mature more follicles. It's usually the first medicine a doctor will prescribe when going through fertility treatments.

The advantage to Clomid over other medications is that it is inexpensive and it's taken orally. The more advanced medications will be much more expensive and will be shots.

Default Re: IUI'S Questions???

I tried 4 IUI's all with clomid and an Hcg trigger shot using frozen donor sperm all were big BFN's so I then moved onto IVF but I was wondering if anyone was told this my RE told me that it could take longer for IUI to work for me because I do not and actually never have had sex with a male so that my body is not used to sperm so my body might see it as an invader at first thought that was wierd but just wondering if any of you have heard that before.

NEVER heard that! You know what, I don't believe it, either.

I think some women have anti-sperm antibodies, but I am pretty sure you have to be exposed to sperm a lot before that happens.

I don't really buy it either because I have heard success stories from people doing just one IUI I just thought it was wierd that he said that and wondered if anyone had ever been told anything like that
