Congratulations on your big decision!

There are a bunch of things to consider & I'm not sure where you are in the process. Where are you getting your sperm from? Known donor or a bank? Are you doing home inseminations or are you going through a doctor?

It seems like we have a mixture of everything here on the TTC board so we should be able to answer most of your questions or at least be able to relate to you. Some people are doing at home inseminations & some went through a clinic. Some got pregnant right away & some are still trying.

Welcome to the group & feel free to ask all the questions you have. Join us on the chatty thread.
Best of luck!

Well we plan to go to the doctor and have the procedure done. We will have to get the sperm from a bank in our area.

We got our sperm fro a bank in CA & had it shipped to our clinic here in CT. There are some banks with good reputations out there.

Doctors will usually start with IUI unless there is some issue that causes them to go straight to IVF. If you don't get pregnant after a few tries of IUI the doctor will probably move on to IVF.

I tried 5 times with IUI then started the IVF process. Even with the IVF meds I didn't produce eggs
So then my partner stepped up (she NEVER wanted to be pregnant!). She did 4 rounds of IUI then got pregnant on her first IVF.

BUT - I have seen plenty of women get pregnant with IUI.

I'll be interested to hear how your first appointment with the doctor goes.
Keep us posted!

If you want to use a local sperm bank I know of two.

Fairfax cryobank- Fairfax
Jones Institute- Norfolk

One is much cheaper than the other but don't offer as many of the wonderful things that the other offers.

Hey Tasha,

I just realized that you live in MD if so what part. Also does anyone know of any insurance that cover the whole thing or at lease discounted a percentage. My health insurance sucks and I'm looking for a better plan with also have this as a coverage.

I thought I'd heard that there was legislation in Maryland that says if you live and work in Maryland and your company health insurance covers pregnancy related complications and deliveries then they are required to cover IVF and other fertility related costs.

I doubt you'd be able to get new insurance that would cover such an expensive endeavour right off the bat, so, I'd look at your current policy (and the legislation) carefully before changing anything.

I should add...

I notice that you are technically in VA. Where do you work? I've spoken to a couple of people who moved to MD because they already worked there and they could only access that part of their health insurance by also living in state. (I even spoke to 1 person who applied for a transfer to a different office and moved in order to get it.)

I live in Baltimore, but I must say that I have Aetna and they are giving methe blues about IVF. I have done everything in my power to try to get to that point so that I can stop doing these stupid home inseminations. I have had every test under the sun but nothing seems to be wrong with me so the insurance company wants a semen analysis from the donor. As a matter offact from the very beginning they were rude and not helpful at all. They kept asking how was I going to get pregnant if I was single and where was I getting sperm from if it wasn't a sperm bank. I explained to them one hundred times that I had a known donor and that we had been trying for months without success. I got so frustrated that I had given up with trying to get them to grant me the funds to go with IVF. Not only that theyinclude IUI in that as well so if I want to try IUI in a clinic I have to pay out of pocket. I work for Verizon so I don't pay anything for my PPO, it's free. I pay a domestic partner fee but it's like $20 bucks. I hope that you have better luck but for now I am working on getting our donor a semen analysis or going through Jones Institute sperm bank.
