Icon5 should I start potty training? opinions needed!!

Hi, I'm Ali and I'm new on this board but I have been all around sheknows boards for about 4 years or so.

I have a husband and two kids (boy 5 and girl 2 yrs) and am pregnant with #3 (23 wks along).

I'm wondering about potty training my daughter--my original plan was to just wait until she was really ready and not rush it at all, but for the past few months she has been taking off her poopy diapers and playing in them and consequently the poop gets EVERYWHERE and I am totally sick of cleaning up poop. We've tried taping them up with every type of tape and she just figures it out eventually. I think she does it because she doesn't like sitting in poop (can't blame her for that) which I think would really help with potty training once the initial idea sets in.

I bought a potty seat and training pants and we are in the process of acclimating to the toilet (i.e. she sits on it naked but hasn't done anything else yet). I'm nervous though because I don't want it to turn into a battle, so I'm dragging my feet a little. Plus she just seems so young, DS was 3 when we did this, and he seemed so much more verbal and I could explain the process to him.

What do you all think? Should I just do it and plow through a week of hell? Do you think she is ready enough? Any tips or advice?

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it!

I say continue aclimateing her to her potty, when she poops in her diaper make a big deal of showing her where the poop is supposed to go, and when she eventualy goes on the potty on accident (it will happen and it will prob scare her at first) make a HUGE deal about what a big girl she is and what not. I have no experience in potty training little girls yet but i have heard that they train sooner than boys so I don't think the age issue has a factor there. the fact that she appears to not enjoy sitting in her poop (unlike my boys ) tells me she is ready to learn about the potty

Have you tried just letting her run around with no pants? I did this with mine for a short period of time, and obviously when no one but immediate family was in the house, and it seemed to help with my girl and my two boys. It made them much more aware of when they had to go.

I would watch her 'face' if you can 'see a poop face then get her to the potty- by saying time to sit on your potty

Dont you miss the good old days when you didnt have to worry too much about when to potty train? (Potty trained my first child at 4 and it was a breeze!) Like everything else things do change and of course they are now doing it younger and younger nowadays. Try this (check my signature) and see if it helps. Good luck!

I am a huge fan of training early. I trained my daughter at 20 months and she did great. If your daughter is smart enough to remove her diaper she is certainly bright enough to understand potty training. Yes, the first week (especially the first couple of days) is really tough. Hang in there! Until the "big day" I would continue what you are doing by bringing her to the potty and making her familiar with it.

I believe your child will let u know when they are ready. I don't believe in rushing them just to get it done, or because u r going to have another baby, ect. All my kids were fully potty trained between 2 1/2 and 3. I don't get this very early training stuff. I think thats more for mom than baby.
