Default Fear of the Potty

I am trying to train my 34 month old DS and he is terrified of the potty. I bought a seat for the big potty and I aslo have a small potty and he refuses to use either one. He screams and cries the minute I put him on it and will not go under any circumstances. He has never went on the potty so he doesn't even know what it feels like and he will scream and shake if I put him there when I know he has to go. Any advice would be great. TIA!

I wish I could help. I'm going through the same thing with my son. It's getting a little ridiculous. I'm thinking about buying him a new potty.. I'm thinking he's afraid of falling off and so many potties now don't have sides or even handles. I'm on the hunt for one that does.

I am not sure he is afraid of falling off. I think he is just afraid of actually going anywhere besides his diaper. I have no idea what to do anymore.

That sounds like a good idea!

My dd is potty trained now but BOY was it NOT fun when we were working on it!
I got my dd an elmo potty time video and let her sit on her potty in the living room while watching it. That helped some.
The biggest things about the toilet that dd was afraid of was the flushing sound it made and the sound of the pee or poo that fell in the toilet. So it really helped to start out with the little kid potty first.
When she would go in her diaper or pull up we would talk about how pee pee goes in the toilet and poo poo goes in the toilet until I would ask her. Where does pee pee go? and she would answer me and sometimes she would even Want me to ask her so she could answer.
I also would let her come with me when I would go and then when I would pee, she could hear the sound and I would tell her It was pee pee. And the same with the other. Then before and during flushing I would wave and the pee or poo and say "bye bye pee pee" "bye bye poo poo".
We would also talk about everybody in our family that goes "pee pee" and "poo poo" In the potty. Especially her older cousins!
We got her a doll that had a potty.
I would give her a treat if she would go in the potty. Something like a marshmallow or even a penny to put in her piggy bank.

Basically it was not just one thing that did the trick it was a whole bunch of things.
Near the end of her learning to go potty I had to not let her wear her pull ups during the day b/c she would go in them b/c they were there. But when I would just have her wear her panties she would NOT go in her panties. But this was only near the end stages of potty training. That did not work the other stages of traning.

I have not potty trained a boy, my son is only 15 months so I am not even thinking about it with him. I do let him come with me when I go and we wave bye bye to the pee pee and poo poo. I am doing it just to get him used to the idea.

I have heard from other moms that train their boys that putting something flushable in the toiled for them to aim it helps. Like a square of toilet paper.
My sister has 4 boys and after a while she decided to not let them stand to pee until they were a bit older b/c she got tired of having to clean pee of the walls and everywhere else in the bathroom when they would miss. which I can totally understand. I would not want to have to clean the bathroom several times a day like that!
Thats what I plan to do with my son.
Once he is potty trained then his dad can show them how to stand and do it. I cant give him an example of that! lol
