question for speech therapist or anyone who can help
Hi! My ds was born in Oct 2003, so he's almost 5. He's been in speech therapy thru our school system since he was 3 1/2. His speech is delay is "expressive and receptive communication delay". He's made huge improvements, partly due to maturingl, I think and party to the therapy.
The class is designed for kids who have issues with pronunciation or stuttering etc, not so much communication, but his teacher always says she works with him especially for his delay.
My thinking for next year is for him to do a full year of regular preschool, VPK, as they call it, and for me to work with him at home more, as opposed to taking him out of preschool to speech class 2 days a week, especially because I don't feel like he's getting all that much out of.
Right now what I'm finding is his biggest hurdle is if something happens to him he has a hard time explaining what happened. Or reading stories he has a hard time explaining what happened. Watching tv I think he can tell you more easily, but when he hears a story or for him to tell you what he just did is hard for him.
Can someone give me some tips or activities to do with him to help him. I know reading stories and asking questions, but is there anything else? I've bought books for preschool to help him and he's so smart with letters and numbers and matching games or which is the same which is different etc. But what else??
Thanks in advance for reading all this!! And for any help.
