Default Vent!

I'm so livid right now! The more and more I read about Graves' tells me there is EVERY reason to test for it during pregnancy since the risk of m/c and birth defects are so high. Why on earth would my "OB" (I use that term lightly as I will never go back), not have thyroid testing a standard for every woman that gets pg? It is beyond comprehension! I have lost TWO babies due to this and it just isn't FAIR!!!!! They could have caught it and tried to get me on meds to save the babies, but no, they're just too damn busy to care! My OB in Boston was much more attentive than these suburb hick doctors! It isn't fair for my babies not to have been born because of something that wasn't checked. KWIM? I understand mother nature does her thing, but when it is preventable, I just can't understand this!

Sorry, I just had to get that out! I'm pissed and sad at the same time.

I am truly sorry to hear what you had to go through especially when your m/c's probably could have been prevented. Just know that your next pregnancy will have a healthy baby waiting.

Sending you lots of hugs!!!

I don't really know why they don't pay more attention to things like that. When I got pregnant with Abby my OB (she was new since we had moved to a new state) noticed my thyroid was enlarged and I was tested for it a few times during my pregnancy. It was never a problem but the OB that delivered my first two never mentioned it.

I am sorry that you had to go through losses, but it is not your doctor that is to blame....I'd bet it is the insurance companies. It would cost them a small fortune to run tests on every pregnant woman. I know that you will become pregnant really soon and when that precious baby is in your arms, you will feel like everything that happened happened for a reason. I had a mc before I got pregnant with my sweet baby boy and just the other night I was thinking, wow, if I had not miscarried last April I would not be holding my sweet little newborn boy. I know it is soooo hard to endure a loss, but have faith that you have found the cause and you are on your way to getting your body into tip top shape for the next gift

Cookie, my aunt had the same problem, she had a hyperthyroid after giving birth to her fourth child. However, there is a difference between a woman that is hyperthyroid while pg, hyperthyroid after pg (both fairly common) and Graves' Disease. I think the fact that a woman can be hyperthyroid just because of how her body reacts to hCG and women that develope Graves' Disease is enough in itself to warrent testing for a thyroid problem for evey pg woman!

Sorca, you are probably right that it has to do with the insurance companies. I do know that my insurance company isn't like that as they paid for Cian's px formula for over yr at $49.99/14ounce can. Plus my PCP doctor told me having a BCBS card was like having a gold card in the medical community, they are willing to pay for tests so that their members can have answers, management and/or cures.

Either way, I plan on finding out whether or not my OB's office tested my thyroid and if they did and didn't tell me something was wrong, there will be you know what to pay for it!

Yes, I am bitter, very bitter~ I am sorry to let it all out on you ladies...you have never done anything other than support me!

Colleen, I don't know how I missed this post. I agree that you have every right to be upset. After you lost the 1st especially they should have done some extra tesing just in case. I may be niave but I though that thyroid testing was part of the panel of testing they did in early pg. I know it has always been done with me. I hope you find a really good doc and that all of this will be taken care of, but you have every right to mourn your losses and be a little angry. Don't ever worry about sounding bitter or angry on this board we have all been there for one reason or another and that's why we are here.
