Wow! I was so scared tonight!! I went to let the dogs out - on the weekends I go out with them, because the neighbors are here - and I heard something after the ducks. I thought maybe one of the cats was after the babies. So, I run and grab the flashlight and start looking under the porch. Nothing there. Then I looked in the duck house (imagine a dog house with a duck nest living in it)... There was a HUGE black snake in going after my duck. Actually, it was after the eggs, but she was defending them. DH came out and grabbed a shovel and tried to get the snake. Well, the snake got mad and started attacking the duck big time - it bit her and wrapped it's body around her. Poor DH couldn't get the shovel in well enough to kill it. We thought the duck was dead. it stopped moving and was in an awful position. The snake was still wrapped around it. I told DH to get the pitchfork - better than a flat shovel. After what seemed forever, he came back with it (and a wood splitter)- I was holding the flashlight and shovel, just in case it started to come out. He was trying to pry the snake loose from the duck (which we thought was dead) when all of a sudden the duck quacked/squeaked and started flapping again!! Now, the duck had been completely still for about 5 minutes. And it came back to life!! It was crazy!!
DH finally pulled the snake out and just started chopping at it with the wood splitter. He killed it, thank goodness adn I think only 2 eggs were damaged from the whole thing. I'm hoping the mother duck will be ok. She was back sitting on her nest again. The snake was at least 3 feet long.. Most likely more. Man, was I scared!!! When DH was trying to kill it, it kept striking out at him. It really makes me think we need a gun!! So scary... I am going to have nightmares tonight!!!
