Default O/T - Cakes

So, I made a few more cakes this weekend. One for a friend who is a consultant for a company called Bagolitas and it was her first open house. The second was for a friend's birthday.

Cute T! It's SOOO hard to decorate cakes. You should see some of the disasters I've tried to do for DD! LOL I'll stick with my cupcakes!! Not a lot of frosting to mess up! LOL My coworker makes a ton of wedding cakes and grooms cakes. She showed me a pic of one that was ADORABLE. It was for her son's wedding. It was a tree trunk, and in the center there was a heart with their names in it. Like it was carved into the tree. It was the cutest thing, and it looked like a real tree trunk!

Oh, and your baby cake was cute. That's funny that it took your mom so long to get it!!

Tkeys, you are a master at fondant! My friend Kara and I are still trying to get the hang of it. Here are a couple pics of our recent cakes. The decorations were made out of fondant but the frosting isn't. The monkey cake was for a baby shower, and the bowling pin was for a little boy's birthday party. I couldn't believe Kara could make the bowling pins with her bare hands. LOL!

One day we will be master cake people such as yourself!!

My cakes come out as flops......and I don't even try to make them fancy, just a plain old regular cake. It is amazing what you can with your craft.

Those cakes are so beautiful, I love the second one (I'm partial to pink and brown together) I wish I could do something like that. Katrina's yours is really nice too!

mmm, those look so yummy! The one time I tried to make a cake from scratch the icing ended up too sweet and the cake was overdone b/c my oven is stupid...and yes, I'm blaming my oven...

Ovens are often the culprit. They never cook according to the recipe. It's a trial and error thing I think. My oven is hyperactive so if the recipe calls for 3 eggs, I will put in 2 eggs and 1 egg yolk (skip the white) and just a little more oil than suggested. If the recipe says bake for 35 minutes, I take 10 minutes off that. The cake is usually perfect.

I don't open the oven to put a toothpick in it. I have a ridiculous trick. I put my oven light on and a few minutes before the cake is done, I bend down to look and I grab the handle of the oven and shake it lightly back and forth. If I see the middle of the cake doing a wobbly dance, that means it's not quite done. A couple minutes later I will try again. If the wobble has gone away, I take it out ASAP.
