Default What are the risks?

I'm new here. I'm not officially TTC yet -- I'm in the TTCH process (Trying to Convince Husband). I'm 35, soon to be 36. Dh is 41. We have two children, ages 4 and 2.5. I'm so much more nervous now, thinking of another pregnancy, because this time I'm "Advanced Maternal Age." I wonder if I should risk it? I won't have any testing done, other than the 20-week ultrasound, I'll just take whatever I get. I'm just wondering what the risks are. Does anyone know any stats?

Thanks and wish my luck convincing dh!

Do we have a greater chance of experiencing a "problem"? Yes. Our chances increase. But the chances for a happy, healthy baby are greater. It's a discussion that pops up again over time. I always use this: Your chances are greater that you will get into a car accident every day, but that won't stop you from getting into your car right?

It's something that definitely needs to be considered and only you and your DH can decide. But most of us here are going for it. The alternative, not have a child at all, would be far worse.

Your babies are lovely by the way!

I think at 38, I had a 1 in 58 chance of something being "wrong," but if you look at it in percentages, I think it was a 98% chance of everything being just fine. I'd say those are great odds.

My 20 week loss had nothing to do with age, however, just to let you know. NTD s(neural tube disorder) can affect anyone, anytime, anywhere!

statistics mean nothing. it doesn't matter if there is a 1 in 2000 chance or a 1 in 200 chance. you can turn out to be the one at 20, 30 or 40. that's the way i thought about it.
