icon16 TTC after miscarriage at age 39

I recently had my first miscarriage in Feb 2008 and have the Dr's okay to start trying again. I have 2 son (13 & 9). I was wondering if anyone new how long it might take to get pregnant after having a miscarriage at about 10 weeks and what my chances of having a healthy pregnancy again are. I dont want to have another miscarriage. I am 39 and would like to get pg asap. I am hoping for a baby girl, but would love either one. I should be ovulating this week 4/12-4/14. My Dr scared me with the risk factors and felt like he was almost discouraging me based on my age. I will be 40 in October. Any positive suggestions welcomed. I whole heartedly want a baby. I am new to this and stubbled upon this website. I am not sure how it works, if I check back or get an email but hope to get a supportive response. I am praying for lots of baby dust for all TTC . Thank you.

Hi BeckyAnn. I had my first baby last summer, three weeks after turning 39. I had a miscarriage in October 2006. I waited to get my period and tried again immediately. I got pregnant that cycle, had an uncomplicated pregnancy (with no high blood pressure or gestational diabetes, etc)... and gave birth to a beautiful baby girl two days after my due date.

So, I don't think it's too soon for you to try again. I wouldn't worry about risks either. If you are generally healthy, there's no reason to think you won't have a perfect pregnancy with a healthy baby!

Good luck, and wishing you lots and lots of pink babydust!

Hi Missy, Thanks for your reply. I just got over my first period (day 5)after having my miscarriage and am on day 10 of my cycle and should be ovulating this coming week on day 12 or 14. It should happen between monday and wednesday. I normally have around a 26-27 day montly cycle. I am so confused on when things are suppose to take place between my husband and I. Some of the nurses I work with tell me if I want a girl to make love 2-3 prior to ovulation and for a boy the day before ovulation and day of ovul. But if you are not exactly sure when you ovulate that makes it somewhat of a guessing game. Your daughter is so beautiful. Congratulations. It is encouraging to hear that all went well for you and you are my age. My dr scared me by telling me 1 out of 40/50 chances of some sort of birth defect. I am very healthy and weigh 130. I eat super healthy and was working out regularly before I miscarried but scared to start it to heavy. I was only working out 50 min a night but was afraid maybe it was to much and maybe thats why I lost the baby. I will never know. Anyway, I bought a Clearblue easy fertility monitor and hope it will help. Hope to talk with you again. Thank you.

Thank you! I charted using Ovulation Calendar and Ovulation Chart - FertilityFriend.com, to get an idea of when I would ovulate. I also used OPK's (ovulation predictor kits, I believe). Even so, it is really hard to predict when you'll ovulate. You kind of have to take your chances. We tried on a Monday, and I ovulated on Thursday, and I did get a girl (yay!!!)

I also worked out the first time, when I miscarried. The second time, I didn't work out until the second trimester. I just took my prenatal as well as an extra 1 mg of folic acid, and I ate only healthy foods. I didn't give in to cravings, and kept my weight down throughout the pregnancy. I gained about 16-17 pounds, and Alyssa was about 7 1/2 pounds. So, I really didn't have to lose any baby weight afterwards either.

As for birth defects... those are pretty good odds. Birth defects can happen at any age. Those are just statistics. And most "defects" are very minor and correctable. If there's a major problem, you usually miscarry before there's even a heartbeat. You're healthy, and there's no reason to be frightened. Lots of women older than we are are having healthy babies.

I hope your stay here is short and sweet!

And remember, even a 1/50 chance translates to a 98% chance of a perfectly healthy baby! Nothing wrong with those odds!

Good Point. 98% sounds pretty good when you put it that way. I will let you know How I fair out this week. Thank you for taking the time to be so kind. I get a lot of negative at my work place about being to old, so it is nice to have someone to talk with that understands and has been there. I really appreciate it.

Missy, How's it going with you? I am doing the 2 week wait to see if we were successful with our attempts at conceiving last week. I am due to have a AF about Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. I am praying that it doesn't come. If it does I'll start all over in May. My tempature has remained in the 98 zone for 5 days now. This is the first month of charting my BBT so I am not sure what to be looking for. I saw the drop/spike last week at O time so I know I O. I will let you know how we come out. It is going to be a long week. Talk to you later. BeckyAnn

Good luck and don't worry I just had a MC same time as you Feb/March and I am now almost 5 weeks with #4. I turn 40 in Sept, so it's totally possible!

Just an update that I am still trying to conceive. I have had three AF since my M/C in Feb and am on day 5 of my cycle. I should ovulate around day 13/14 of my cycle. Say a prayer for me, I am getting very disappointed. I will be 40 in October of this year and my clock is ticking. I really want a healthy baby and am worried about my age factor. I would love to have a daughter and will be thankful for whatever God blesses me with. I am still charting BBT and CM and using Clearblue monitor so have a good idea about when I Ovulate but it just hasnt happened yet. Praying for pink Baby Dust this next week. Will update later in the month on results. Talk to you soon.

Trimmer's Trio of blue, Thank you for the words of encouragement and I am so happy for you and pray all goes well. I really needed that. I feel very discouraged but am not giving up. We are about the same age only one month different. I also have two sons that is why I would like a daughter this time but would be thrilled with a son as well. It would be nice to have some female bonding like mother/daughter. I lost my mother several years ago and have no sisters. I wouldn't trade my guys for the world they are great. My husband is content and about ready to give up on trying so I pray it happens soon for us. Is your doctor encouraging. I feel like mine doesn't understand my desire and almost scared me to death about the risk at my age. Well hope to talk to you soon. Thanks again. BeckyAnn

Thanks BeckyAnn! I noticed too that we are so close in age! LOL A girl would totally throw my family fora loop. My twins were the first after 34 years, then Jacob came so a girl would be fantastic, but healthy is most important. Keeping you in my prayers!!

I have been taking prenatal vitamins for over a year and trying to eat healthy to better my chances of a healthy baby. I have the hardest time cutting back on my one cup of coffee a day. I switched to 1/2 and 1/2 and am still having the one cup. I get up at 5am every morning and go to work. I just have myself convienced I need it. I have read some say it is fine and other say to completely stop. Did you try hard to get pregnant or did it just happen? I must just be missing the right day. I will be praying for you as well. It is nice talking to someone about this. Thanks a bunch. BeckyAnn
