I just got a call from the nursing supervisor of the maternity ward where I delivered.
When I had Owen, he was immediately transferred to Children's Hospital, over an hour away from me. I got to see him briefly while I was in the recovery room. My husband was told to leave me at the local hospital and to follow Owen when they transported him via mobile NICU ambulance.
My DH stayed with Owen that whole first day and came back that evening to the hospital where I was at that night. The next morning he drove back to Children's to see Owen. I wasn't able to be released the next day d/t having had a C-section.
Our local hospital has been working in conjunction with Children's Hospital on a telehealth/telemedicine program. We were the first family to experience the program. Basically, they had a webcam where I was able to see Owen and DH in Owen's hospital room while I was in mine. The NICU nurses/drs were able to explain things that were going on with Owen and show me the various tubes and medical equipment that Owen was on at the time. It brought me a HUGE peace of mind to be able to see my baby and know and see a little about what was going on with him while I couldn't physically be there.
Anyways, the nurse supervisor that called me today wants me, DH, and Owen to be a part of a video they are making to show to Congress in hopes of getting some federal funding to be able to make this program available nationally and in smaller communities such as ours where a Children's Hospital is not close to us so mom's like me who have their babies taken from them at birth d/t to medical problems or preemies and transferred to another hospital can at least see and know what's going on.
She said there will be news media there (she doesn't know if it will be local or national news or both) and they are still working on all of the details so she doesn't know a lot right now but needed our consent in order to get things going. All we know right now is that the taping will be on Jan. 7th.
I feel pretty good about this and happy to be a part of it. I definately think it's something every hospital should have because separating a mother from her newborn baby is the worst thing a mother can go thru.
I'll give more details as soon as I know.
