Default What's the trick to get the powder to dissolve?

I always end up with a clump of gooey powder in the bottle. Is there a trick to getting it to dissolve?

Thanks

Are you putting the water in first? That's what I always did and then just shake like crazy.

I put half the amount of water than I'm suing in the bottle and I use boiling hot water. I shake it up then fill the other half with cold water to cool it back down and shake again. The hot water seems to help it dissolve. Some formulas are worse than others to clump though. Enfamil Nutramigen is one of the worst!

I put the water in first then I put in the powder. BRU sells a little mixer thing and I only get little clumps. I make bottles only once a day so I mix it in a measuring cup and then pour into the bottles.

I use a regular table (butter) knife, to stir it up.
I also make it in one of those Zyliss "shaker" thingys.. and that usually works real good.

I add just a smidgen of rice cereal. Our pedi had us adding a large amount when he was younger because he had reflux. He's since outgrown the reflux, but I found that adding about 1/2 a tsp to a bottle keeps the formula from clumping - even if you use cold water like we do. Water first, then cereal, then formula... shake like crazy. I wouldn't do this with a really young baby though unless advised by a pedi.

Just adding my two cents. I add the water first, then add the powder, then shake. Nothing really special.

I always added the water, then the powder and swirled it so the powder was in a kinda ball in the middle then shook it like mad. If I didn't swirl it first I ended up with a big clump in the nipple, and if I put the powder in first I ended up with a clump stuck to the bottom. Once I got that trick down I didn't have any trouble with clumping at all any more. When doing 8 oz bottles though the water can't all be put in right away or the formula won't fit on top before it's shaken, so use 6 oz water, get the formula mixed, then add the last 2 oz water and shake it a bit again. I'm picky lol.
