I'm officially here!
This forum is not active but I hope it does soon because I really need the support. My Elias turned one two days ago and we're still breastfeeding pretty much exclusively (very little or no solids). It's the first time I have nursed past 11 mos and I'm already encountering negative comments from people. Yesterday we had his bday party and a couple of people said "Well now this means he has to stop breastfeeding" or something similar. I just told them that he will stop breastfeeding when he wants to and when I asked them why they thought he should stop all i got was "because he has to" and also "because it's not right" Well it's right for me and right for Elias. I gave them the WHO information to pretty much shut them up but I don't know if they were educated enough to understand..lol.
Please I hope someone else is in here to help me out my first time EBF. If not, please lead me in the right direction..thanks

Re: I'm officially here!
I check here occasionally. I am still nursing Eli and he will be 18 months tomorrow. Dd I bf to 15 mo when she quit, I thought that I would stop around a year and so had weaned down to 3-4 feedings a day and with a low supply it just dwindled at that point. Ds I bf to 18 mo and we slowly weaned. Eli is still nursing 3 times a day and would probably nurse more often if he could. He will occasionally slip in a 4th feeding when we are having a really rough day or if he isn't feeling well.
In my experience, people just don't get it, even moms who have bf and stopped around a year. It really is my choice with my husbands blessing and my childs choice, and is no one elses business. I usually tell people that babies can still get a lot of nutrients from bf and although they can get them from other sources, this is how God intended it to be. The WHO recommends bf through 2 years, and although I have never made it that long, more power to those who do.

Re: I'm officially here!
I check in here occasionally also. The longest I've nursed is with this baby and we are at 11 months 3 days right now. I'm shooting for over 2 years. Maybe we can support each other and cheer each other on!

Re: I'm officially here!
Oh definitely we can . Everything is great so far..Elias is nursing pretty much exclusively..he hasn't had any solids today. I have such a hard time getting him to eat..he'd rather play with his food so I keep nursing him to make sure he gets all his nutrients

Re: I'm officially here!
My sincerest apologies to you ladies...
I am supposed to be co-hosting this forum and have just gotten busy with my new baby.
I hope to get active again on this forum though.
Congrats to all of you mamas who've made it past the 1 year mark. Speaking from experience, nursing a toddler is a wonderful, wonderful thing. I actually enjoy nursing more after the 1 year mark, if you can believe that. I think there is nothing cuter than a nursing toddler!

Re: I'm officially here!
I guess that I am a little late. I never checked this forum because I didn't really know the definition of extended breastfeeding, so I didn't know that I qualified. LOL To me, it is so sad that after 12 months is considered extended. I have had a few comments myself, but I am fortunate that the people I am closest to either support me or are smart enough to keep their lips zipped! LOL Like somehow a cow's breastmilk is better for my child than my breastmilk, I don't think so! Anyway, I will get off my soapbox for now... LOL
My DD is 18 months tomorrow and we are still going strong. We didn't push the solids and then we had food allergy issues, so she still has a pretty limited diet so we still nurse pretty regularly. I would really like her to get breastmilk until she is 2 for sure because I don't want to give her cow's milk. I hope that there will be a natural progression to weaning. At this point, I don't see how since she is such a fan of nursing! LOL

Re: I'm officially here!
IMO the same women who comment are those whose child can't sleep without a bottle or sippy cup well into thier third year. whats the difference between that and nursing? i'd rather my dd be comforted to sleep by me than an object. my dd is only 5 months old and you wouldn't believe the grief i've gotten over not introducing solids. "oh that poor baby is going to starve!" if i hear that one more time!!! Grrrrr.
