Default Too much Folic Acid?

I purchased a bottle of Folic Acid to take while TTC, and when I got the green light from my OB/GYN he said to go ahead and start taking pre-natals. I noticed there is also 100% Folic Acid in the prenatals, and I'm still taking the Folic Acid on it's own. Is there such thing as too much Folic Acid??

Thanks!

I would say no from what I have read. Folic acid is depleted quickly from our bodies, which is why we have to replenish it everyday.

Are you sure your prenatal vitimans are 100% folic acid? Mine have about 14-15 other vitamins in them too, along with my folic acid.

If you feel nervous you can call your OB and I'm sure they would answer any questions you have.

Also, is there any paticular reason you want to continue taking the OTC folic acid?

I have read that our bodies only absorb what they need and expel the rest, so it is not likely to take too much. I would say that you shouldn't need more that 800 mcg a day. The only time doctors prescribe more is if you have a family history of spina bifida or have given birth to a baby with spina bifida.

I have heard 400 mcg should be the min and the max is 1000 mcg. Most prenatals have 400 or 800, so the supplements are probably not necessary.

600-800mg is what my OBGYN recommended.

Sounds like you are getting plenty. I agree that the supplement is probably not needed.

Good luck!
